Stalling just before landing after a glide slope interception from above while fully relying on a non-functioning auto throttle does seem a common theme with TK@AMS.

Re: BA Oslo-bound jet in suspected bird strike

Why isn't this automated?! Surely a fúcking sensor to indicate a door or latch is not closed properly isn't beyond the pale - this kind of technology is rudimentary and exists on other kinds of transportation. I recognize that it's not a particularly straightforward thing to implement post-design b...

Re: What's wrong here?

It must be costly to repack/replace the slides and re-mount over-wing exit doors no?
I think this is done during every few years during maintenance anyway. Getting it to the maintenance facility might be a more difficult issue.

It has been brought to my attention that a certain ISGPOTM is now an Airbus pilot.

Thank you.
Was the 777F too modern for him? What does he fly, an A300 (at least it still has a yoke)?

Re: 787 inflight structural breakup in 3....2....1....

Well, yes, everything (even Lithium batteries) needs oxygen to burn, if we are talking about flame and combustion. You always need a fuel and an oxidizer, but the oxidizer does not need to be oxygen. Fluor, Sulfur and Chloride will also do, but are not as abundant in the atmosphere. A good example ...

Re: 787 inflight structural breakup in 3....2....1....

No, I don't know the 787.... So, does that make the battery(ies) the main player? No, but that would explain the need for two APU Gens to power those 250VAC starter generators. The APU is probably heavier because of that, which would require more power to start it. Maybe you can also start an engin...

Re: 787 inflight structural breakup in 3....2....1....

Every transport catagory aircraft I know of has air starters for the engines and an electric starter for the APU.
Then you do not know the 787, as it uses starter generators on the engines as well.

Re: 787 inflight structural breakup in 3....2....1....

Gabriel, you're missing the point. Even if indeed this is an issue of needing a "much" more powerful battery, they still don't necessarily have to go with Li-ion. If that means using a Ni-Cad battery that's several hundred (or even a thousand) pounds heavier than most (I doubt that's anyw...

Re: 787 inflight structural breakup in 3....2....1....

Which still won't make the battery(ies) the main player. The main players will be generators, which will need to be more powerful (or there will be more of them). Case in point is the P-8, which, unlike the 738/9, uses two generators per engine rather than one. But you still need a lot more battery...

Re: 787 inflight structural breakup in 3....2....1....

My point was that in a transport-category aircraft the battery isn't so vital a component that it has to be the latest and greatest.
Unless you go for an all (or more) electric architecture.
