Re: Now Here is an Idea Whose Time Has Come

I recall problems after 911 when all the aircraft were grounded. Diesel fuel shortages were cropping up because jet fuel (using the same pipelines) had nowhere to go as the storage tanks at airports were full. In the case of soup pipelines that means you could transport tomato soup through one of t...

Re: Smuggling plane burns down

Transporting 390 KG to a lorry is a fair amount - that's about the weight of five or six adults (three if you're American). I have seen video of military jets forcing planes down - and indeed firing upon them - in the past.

Re: PIA A320 in Karachi: loss of power after GA, crashed in residential area during final approach

PIA, Pakistan's national airline, has grounded a third of its pilots for having fake licenses
This could lead to PIA being banned from western airspace if true.

Re: PIA A320 in Karachi: loss of power after GA, crashed in residential area during final approach

Yes, it is possible. But my bet is that the only difference between "this occasion" and previous ones is that this one ended up bad. Had they not landed with the gear up, we would have never heard of this story which would still have been a horror story. How many horror stories did these pilots mak...

That is the human factor I described. Distraction. Dereliction of duty. Ok, let me step back a bit. When you say: What we don't yet understand is what caused this remarkable recklessness . What of all that happened do you mean with "this remarkable recklessness"? Because bringing the landing gear b...

All the ones you listed in your previous post are crossed out. A human factor (disagreement, cultural issue, something impacting their emotional state, the presence of a third party in the cockpit authorised or not) - A physical factor (discombobulation by poisoning, lack of oxygen) affecting judge...

i want to say how touched I am - I went back and read the condolence book that was put up when Don Moore died. The heady days of AD created quite an extraordinary community. When I picked this place up 8 years ago it was - let's be honest - already on its last legs. The astonishing amount of vibranc...

Re: PIA A320 in Karachi: loss of power after GA, crashed in residential area during final approach

3we, you were right... If you coming too high and too fast, why wouldn't you extend the gear if only for the sake of adding drag and help on your crazy attempt to salvage a highly unstabilzed approach? And that's what they did. They lowered the gear when 7200ft AGL and 10.5 miles out (where they sh...

Nice, but where was the orchestra? When a ship sinks, isn't there supposed to be an orchestra?
The sound of the salty sea dogs murmering "fúckkk" is orchestral enough for me.

Re: PIA A320 in Karachi: loss of power after GA, crashed in residential area during final approach

My first thought when I saw Monchie's comment was... Right, like when the plane would not glide further, climb better, keep the nose up, or keep running with no fuel, despite the plot commanding so. If you command the plane to turn left, turn right, climb or descend then it will do so - I had perha...

Re: PIA A320 in Karachi: loss of power after GA, crashed in residential area during final approach

I think we are getting closer to the truth - The crew approach fast, perhaps they are distracted or misinformed, or one of them thinks the other will "do something about it" - The flaps are incorrectly set due to rushing, confusion or simple incompetence - or even hubris and that a fast landing is "...

Per my Fleet Chief. In the simulator, the gear handle was selected down at 280kts. The gear did not move, there was no ECAM. The only thing that did happen was red "UNLK" lights illuminated on the gear indication panel. At approximately 260kts, the L/G GEAR NOT DOWNLKD ECAM came up. Once airspeed d...

No. You make a good point. Something does appear to be catastrophically wrong. But consider multiples of the issues I shared above?

It's ok to post thoughts or speculation in regular size text. Making it very small impedes the discussion somewhat. Let us try to think of the matters which may have caused the initial issue - trying to keep these as realistic as possible - A disagreement between the pilots - either one that is evid...

Re: PIA A320 in Karachi: loss of power after GA, crashed in residential area during final approach

monchavo speculation I am concerned that the CVR has not been recovered and I believe that the longer it remains "missing" the less likely "we" are to find it, due to the impact of what it will contain and the potential reputation damage to PIA. Nation state actors, culture and poverty will play a p...

Have you actually heard the videos with the ATC recordings? Yes. I am continually amazed by the poor quality of communication and how hard it is to make out much of what is being said. You have to have an "ear" for it. I am disappointed that very little useful dialogue is exchanged outside of "proc...

Re: PIA A320 in Karachi: loss of power after GA, crashed in residential area during final approach

Probably need the cockpit thought recorder...”Damn, we’re dragging the TAIL.” (Inferring not_the engines) ? The CVR will be interesting, but the data recorder I think will be the one that is really interesting in relation to what the plane told the pilots, what they missed, what they picked up etc.
