Re: LHR 1964

PS Was that a SAS DC8? SAS flew DC-8s into Heathrow pretty regularly from the 60s into the 80s. I was catching DC-8-62s at least into the mid-80s to Copenhagen. The movie is of excellent quality, very nostalgic, with lots of fine old liveries. Real airliners, real airlines. Note the Pan American DC...

I believe that the time-honoured technique is to cautiously approach the strip with gear extended, though prepared to go around for an alternate approach if requested.

Re: Small mercies

Ever since the failed efforts of Richard Reid “The shoe bomber”, passengers have been required to remove their shoes and place them in a plastic tray for inspection. After the 2006 “Liquid bomb plot” we have had to do likewise for our carry-on liquids and gels. We can only be grateful that the TSA ...

Re: QANTAS Troubles the latest news.......

Well that's the interesting thing now is how much brand damage has been done, was having a chat to my airport manager today and Virgin Australia thinks they will retain 3 of every 5 guests that had been booked with QANTAS and flown with Virgin Australia over the last day or so........... In my view...

Re: LGA-DCA shuttle

Thank you, David. Brooklyn is probably what I'd end up doing too. Driving in Manhattan does not appeal!
I don't find driving in Manhattan too bad, at least compared with Rome, Damascus or Kabul, say. The problem with driving in Manhattan is not driving, as such, but parking.

Re: LGA-DCA shuttle

Do you drive all the way in to Manhattan, David? How long does it take? I usually allow 4 1/2 to 5 hours (some hot shots claim 4 hours), plus any stopping time. I myself usually drive to and sleep in Brooklyn and take taxis or subways from there. Driving is not for everyone, but for me advantages i...

Re: LGA-DCA shuttle

I agree about rail : sadly too unreliable. I actually drive more these days (and on other occasional routes too, as the whole flying experience has become mostly pretty miserable), but I know this wouldn't suit everyone. On the flight side, on the basis of 3-4 trips this year, there are usually a fe...

Re: US debt crisis

As I think we all know, the US debt deal this week solves nothing. America faces a moral crisis as much as economic one. We can't get $10 of government services by paying in just $6. It cannot go on. A wise man once told me that if something cannot go on, it will stop.

Next, look at your typical Delta Air Lines pilot.....
Well, if I have to. I probably asked you this question a million years ago, but is it true, or was it ever true, that Delta had a rule forbidding their pilots to wear beards, or was that some kind of Internet legend ?

Why is anyone surprised at the heinous actions of the head of the International Monetary Fund, Dominique Strauss-Kahn? He is only doing in his private life what he does in his professional life. I'd be interested to know if the latest incident is on one of the older 737s and just how many cycles they get from SWA's numerous short legs DP, aircraft first flew 1996 (Southwest has a few 737s going back to 1984 and many others dating from the 1980s). Another forum suggests 39,768 cycles and 48...

3WE, I notice that in all your recent flight reports you seem to experience unusual or exceptional incidents or even compromised safety (at least in your opinion). I wonder why this happens. This is just not fair. I have to make hundreds and hundreds of flights before anything mildly unusual happens.

Ed, I appreciate your remarks. Three questions, if I may : 1) If you or your family were in Tokyo now, would you stay or leave ? 2) Not much is being said about the spent fuel ponds adjacent to the reactors. These ostensibly seem more vulnerable than the reactors themselves and are still potentially...
