Re: FAO Messi of Aeroengineering

4- The relatively good outcome of UAL was a great achievement given what the flight crew knew, but it was NOT thanks to the 30000 hours TT of experience of Captain Haynes. And it could (which doesn't mean would) have been done better had the pilots knew and trained how to manage phugoid, what they ...

Re: FAO Messi of Aeroengineering

Nobody can precisely replicate in the sim an engine damage and failure that ends up with the cowling flying away and hitting and severing a pax window with the pax partially flying away. So let's not practice engine failures and loss of pressurization. Because you know, not replicating EXACTLY the ...

Re: FAO Messi of Aeroengineering

I don't understand why, if 2 crews actually did it on the first attempt with different degrees of success (one including leaving the plane with no more damage than it had already received from the missile strike), some flyboys believe that it cannot be done better with proper training and practice....

Re: FAO Messi of Aeroengineering

Indeed. To whom should we address the letter to tell your airline to add this to the training program-or should we go to the FAA?
Go directly to the phugging Miami FSDO.

Re: FAO Messi of Aeroengineering

Part II: Take all of the above and ask if it's worth the time to train folks in Gabes 4-part procedure and let them get a feel for how it works on a healthy, big ass aeroplanie...with Evan bitching that more time is needed on how to operate autopilots in FLCH and UAS and dual EALCAS failures and av...

Re: FAO Messi of Aeroengineering

So Gabe, you've got this tone that if the Sioux City guys had some sim time and just done 1, 2, 3, and 4 there'd have been no crash.
It's not just a tone, it's apparently a fact, he wrote a phugging thesis on it.

Re: FAO Messi of Aeroengineering

I didn't say it was a failure. I did say that had they managed the phugoid better the plane could have been landed with no fatalities. Sorry if you don;t like that, but that's more a fact than an opinion.
Well...it's not like this is the first time you made up your own "facts"...

Re: FAO Messi of Aeroengineering

Accept our apologies for playing "what if"and for any implication that Sioux City was an easy phix.
Some think that it was such an easy phix that even a Tomahawk phlyer could have managed it.

Re: FAO Messi of Aeroengineering

I am not buying your act that maybe the Domestic Super Aviation Encyclopedia of the Millennium does not give a flying phugoid about basic fundamental aircraft behavior. As to what I want you to do about it? I seem to recall two things about you: 1) You hand fly a fair bit. 2) You spent a significan...

Re: FAO Messi of Aeroengineering

On the contrary. I agree that it is super unlikely that you will ever need it, but if a large aircraft experiences enough failures to where the phugoid is much of a factor, managing it is probably going to be key to the outcome, as it was in UA at Sioux City and DHL at Baghdad. I thought you said S...

Re: FAO Messi of Aeroengineering

I'm getting the sense you'll be milking that RTO business for a really long time much like relentless pull ups and storm penetration and more...much like Gabby milks the phugoid...and Flyboy milks the "What?" 1. Fixed. 2. I'm getting the sense that bears crap in the woods. Well, I could have just t...

Re: FAO Messi of Aeroengineering

Amazingly, sometimes we amateurs know one or two things...so much so that we even make wild ass guesses that RTO autobraking includes an anti-skid system.
I'm getting the sense you'll be milking that RTO business for a while...much like Gabby milks the phugoid...

Re: FAO Messi of Aeroengineering

Seriously, what's with you and the Phugoid? I'm genuinely curious. We think you guys should know about them and the UA-DC-6.7-Iowa-City-No-Hydraulic dudes apparently did not. Important note: It was roughly 15 years ago I learned the TERM phugoid. BUT LONG BEFORE THAT... as I kid, I played with bals...

Or? They may turn out to be perfectly fine. I am willing to take that gamble. I once bought an SRS module used for $30 that costs $1000 new. It's still working.

Re: Major Achievements

Why would I want to pay top dollar on new parts that will outlive the rest of the car? Gosh...maybe because the used parts you just put in there are in no better shape than the ones that came out or at least won't be in better shape for very long, so you may have to do the job again and buy the par...

Re: F.A.O.: 3WE

One question I have is has Gabe gone through the proper TSA clearance? As a non-citizen, he can't just go into a sim. Flyboy- you are one royal pain in the butt with all of your attention to detail...sometimes, it's a tad Evanesque (acknowledging that you have a somewhat higher accuracy level). Tha...

Did you not see the bit about $1200 vs. $160 for parts?
What is someone of your caliber doing with a nearly 20-year-old W210?
I couldn't find an RHD W116 on ebay.
Autohausaz has those parts for about $650 new.

Re: Major Achievements

The repair shop quoted me almost $1500 to replace the secondary air pump and two check valves on my '99 M-B E320, $1200 alone in parts. I thanked them, bought the parts used on ebay for $160, and installed them myself. I will now spend the $1300 I saved on akkevit and fat women. What is someone of ...

Re: FIFA 2018 Rusia World Cup thread

Flyboy, What did you think of the trip over and the experience? I am genuinely interested in your thoughts and feelings as a professional experiencing a very different kind of aircraft as a passenger. I am conscious that many Americans have never tried 747s simply because there are so few in operat...

Re: FIFA 2018 Rusia World Cup thread

This next post will be a combination of a comment on this thread's theme as well as a brief flight report. Having been a DFB fan since 1982 and having access to non-rev travel, having not been on a 747 of any kind since 2000 and never having been on a 744, I woke up yesterday and decided it might be...
