Re: I am tired of hearing about unstabilized approaches...
No-flaps approaches have different reference speeds, different braking requirements, etc. If you haven't briefed this (which you won't have), unless there's some reason to the contrary, like a mess of cautions about hydraulics, you should go around and do the proper preparation. Also it seems they ploughed in sideways, which is rather curious. Most of the scenarios I can think of that would lead to this involve an upset and tumble first (apparently not) or don't result in wings-almost-level. Well, you never know... The LET of the other thread lost control and did a 360 bar...

Re: B-52, It keeps going and going...
From a pure thrust perspective you could probably get away with two, although there are a number of reasons not to. (e.g. rudder authority) However, moving to four seems necessary to get most of the touted advantages. If nothing else, to get the efficiency improvements you want a high-bypass design ...

Re: Interesting (recent) total air disasters
Let L-410 in Russia crashed shortly before landing . So that one's interesting... according to today's update the event began 14 seconds before the command to enter reverse. And, given that the right-side propeller was going faster but the plane was yawing to the right, this suggests that the prop ...

Today the CBC's reporting that the operator certificate's been pulled. A few days ago they were also saying that it took the pax 30 minutes to get the exit door open, which if true raises quite a few eyebrows. Also it seems they ploughed in sideways, which is rather curious. Most of the scenarios I ...

I agree with Gabriel: it's only a matter of time before enough swiss cheese lines up and something serious happens.

Re: Discussion of Beech Bananza Crash - Instrument Failure
It strikes me as insane to not have a backup horizon in a plane that one is obviously using for primary transportation in all weather conditions. That said, I really didn't like the video. I thought it didn't organize its points well and it didn't concentrate on the right ones. Seems to me the key p...

Arguments like these are (I originally wrote "why", but it's actually more like "how") causality is such a slippery subject when examined closely. Besides, the pilot actions can't be taken as the root cause; clearly the pilots were set up to fail by having nothing on file for wha...

*I don't think that "unusual" alone conveys the meaning of " insólito " -even if it is the correct translation according to Them Googles-. I think it is more like a combination of unusual(exceptional?), strange and unexpected. For example: Evanie, Brianie, BBie and ATLCrewboyie ...

Still, so much WTF. Beginning with: given that the airport was in the middle of a scheduled closing known in advance for months, how did dispatch let them go? And continuing with: if by "bingo" he mean "need to divert", why didn't he just bloody well divert? Sure maybe it looks b...

Yep, that's the one. Not much actual commonality I guess...This total fan blade and engine inlet disaster?I feel like we've seen this before, one entire stage of an engine getting up and going walkies. But i can't remember when or where.

Re: Near Total Crosswind Disasters
Years ago I was flying into DEN on UA when we picked up unexpected gusty 30-knot crosswinds on short final. This was not exactly smooth (not really possible) but overall it was very well done, with the bank angle neatly tracking the windspeed and certainly none of this swerving crap. I wanted to say...

It's terrible. I keep wanting to throw everything up and fly down and help out, except none of my skills are the silghtest bit relevant and I'd only be in the way.
One thing's clear though: it's time for statehood. The current setup is way too much 'separate but (not even) equal'.

I came across an interesting paper recently, but it's from 20 years ago: http://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/full/10.1175/1520-0493(1997)125<1251:PMOCAT>2.0.CO%3B2. (hopefully that's not paywalled) While there's apparently been more research along these lines since, I don't have the impression that this...

The colors of incandescent lights become surprisingly indistinct at a distance. I wonder how much LED lighting improves this, if any. That said, it's easy to do this: you expect to see two runways, you see two runways, even if one of them isn't. Especially somewhere you've been a zillion times befor...
