Re: Railroad Thread
In any case, having a gazillion ton vehicle with a gazillion wheels and a gazillion brakes and have it slow down at 0.5 MPH per second at best is either stupid, or bad engineering, or there is something wrong with the condition of the brakes and people don't care. It is so ridiculous that it defeats...

Re: Railroad Thread
2) The significant weight of the train (about 286,000 lbs or 130,00 kg per car) represents a lot of momentum. It is also a lot of normal force, so the braking acceleration should not be affected... unless the weak link is not the friction between the wheels and the rails but between wheels and the ...

Fixed? The Boeing Leadership was originally McDonnell's, and became a merger prize when M-D bought Boeing with Boeing's money in the late 90's and kept the Boeing name as a disguise .

Re: Railroad Thread
Good point! According to the intarwebz, COF is around 0.5 for a dry rail, 0.3 for wet, and a bit less if frost is present. I know leaves can also have an effect but couldn't find a number for that condition, probably because it's so variable. Dumb question but, do trains have brakes on all the whee...

The following video shows a derailment of one train while another is passing to give you an idea of how these types of circumstances unfold. A grain train was traveling west on double track when one of its car's axles failed causing it to derail onto the adjacent track moments before an eastward oi...

That plot is a lot more readable! Too bad it's missing the normal acceleration trace though, that one matters. It’s not missing. It’s right there in the blue section. I re-traced the plots and re-shuffled (including bringing up the wind plots that were in the next page) to have a longitudinal secti...

Re: A flyover of a different kind
Was playing a bit with Chat GPT yesterday. I asked for the sequence of notes for The Star-Spangled Banner. Said sure, here it is, and gave me a sequence of notes for not_The Star-Spangled Banner. I pointed it out and it said sorry, my bad, here you have the correct one. Which was another not_correct...

Re: Not_Delta 191
I do not believe the captain, based on a somatogravic illusion, ordered the first officer to nose over, and that the first officer blindly complied (or complied, because he also felt the somatogravic illusion). I know it’s total, ass-hat, outsider speculation, but I’m thinking that a nose down inpu...

Is there a question there somewhere?
YesNo.
6. This crash and 809 both make mention of “walls of water”. I wonder if that has ever been researched as a possible signature that might be teased out of radar?

Three people have said “they don’t think it’s a stall/spin”. ZERO PEOPLE have said, IT ABSOLUTELY IS NOT A STALL/spin. . Then you say YOU THINK a stall spin is LESS likely. So, I’m just not getting the ongoing lectures and counter arguments and corrections. As to the question of what any of us know...

Re: Caravan Crash Credentials Connundrum
I think it is perfectly possible that it is stall related. Not necessarily "most likely". But what we see in the video and report doesn't make me think that it could not be stall related. And I’m really obsessed with one of the top killers in GA which is actually preventable and where a g...

Re: Caravan Crash Credentials Connundrum
My interpretation is that Ocelot watched the film and concluded that “it didn’t seem entirely consistent with stalling one wing.” (A speculative declaration based on video evidence). And I wholly agree with your interpretation of what Ocelot said, and with what Ocelot said if he said what we interp...
