Re: Railroad Thread
I acknowledge a lot of electrical light-urban rail systems, but I don’t see anything happening with freight. Europe has freight trainies with electric locomotivies . Indeed… Especially those Krauts. It is proven that it works OK… I guess my point is that if it’s soooooooo important to electrify tra...

Re: Railroad Thread
Imagine what life would be like if you had a small motor & battery pack on each car, to provide per-car "dynamic braking" (regen), and a propulsive boost to get the thing moving from a stop. I imagine it would be expensive. To hell with batteries, just add overhead wires, pantographs ...

One of the things I mention. - ***For traction you only have the traction wheels available. For braking you have all wheels.*** Thanks for the information. But, [Not italics]We even us aggies and Cajeros automaticos) already know this. Thus the sanders and flying sparks and, etc for starting the tr...

Re: More Braking-Related Crashes
I used to run my Toyota Rav 4 up to about 100 and shove the door open. I was mildly disappointed in the braking.
But I do not_infer that a 172 door and a bit heavy and 7000 feet of ‘altitude’ and 10 degrees of flaps eats a lot of the 0-320s effective HP…

*** I'm not anti-EV *** I am, to some degree. I think they are a great second, go-to-work car…charge overnight. But, young MS 3WE had a horrible experience with a rental on a business trip, in CA. Charging was a hassle and time consuming. Did I say that this was in San Diego? Kalifornia… I call bol...

More Braking-Related Crashes
In this case, a new spoiler system for a 172.
While I tire of speakists, this was weird enough to be interesting.

Re: Railroad Thread
Cool video. My understanding is that AC systems provide for “easier” traction-control systems and maybe the “rocking” we observed was “fly by wire” and not the engineer switching throttle notches? That stuff always amazes me as my household power tools do not like being stationary with lots of elect...

Flange greasers??? ***if the grease migrates from the flange to the horizontal wheel surface... badness will ensue*** The Aggie doesn’t need to have viscous fluid dynamics or differential equations to tell you that grease migration is kind of efficient. [Gabriel links to some brake systems] […] I don't know. Don't blame me for not addressing the question for which I don't know the answer. What I do know is that steel on steel has a static coefficient of friction that is almost always better (and many times much much better) than 0.1. I am mildly t...

Re: Railroad Thread
[Gabriel links to some brake systems] You are not_addressing the question. Your links are to systems already developed. You offer no discussion as to why sanders aren’t on cars. No acknowledgement that electrical control might be needed for faster response. No consideration as to the engineering, m...

Aggie thoughts on what [i]we[/i] should do about braking…
Several disjointed thoughts: The hell-better Aeroengineer has not offered suggestions, just complaints. Maybe our current braking needs to be as it is to 1) prevent wheel sliding/flat spotting which do sometimes happen. Maybe our current braking needs to be as it is to prevent derailments/damage whi...

Ship departure procedures…
I read where the ship’s initial departure had tug boat assistance or accompaniment, but that when the ship got “up to speed/~9 kts” the tugboats were dismissed.
The pilots apparently “called for them to return” when the power failed, but likely too late for then to rendezvous and do anything.

Not_pictured: Almost 20 additional bridges.
Footnote: Gabe, your Hell-Better Bridgeoengineer Buddies can’t seem to agree on the procedures for designing these things.

Who the hell is a TV programming director here, that would schedule stuff for our entertainment.
Runaway train (the one with Captain Kirk and the durnk inverted MD-80 pilot) is on TV tonight.
Basically a true story (but with mucho TV embellishment and inaccuracies).
There is a lot of braking.
