In a completely unrelated comment....several major hubs operations have been completely shutdown on a preemptive basis both today AND tomorrow by a number of airlines. While selectivley cancelling flights is always common in snowstorms, I've never seen it done on this type of level for a relatively...

As Stephen Colbert has said, they shouldn't have called it the iPad
They should have called it the "TamPod"

Re: Ethiopian Airlines 737 crashes near Beirut
Hand flown departure into thunderstorm, Then vertigo (like sharm el sheik (sp?)) would be one possible explanation.
However from what I've read Ethiopian has excellent safety and thus I would assume good CRM... Anyway just a theory, time will tell

What type of 737? NG?
Wasn't there a Kenyan 737NG which crashed under similar circumstances a few years ago? (Stormy weather, shortly after departure?)

Yikes, even an extremely low speed overrun over the edge would mean certain death.
God the national media would have a field day with that, Fox News would be crying out for a bouncy castle to be placed at the end of the runway...

Re: Snow Shovels and Aviation
Ahh but yes, when the snow has drifted to reach the top of a 10 foot hanger door, and the runway is equally covered in snow, it makes it somewhat difficult I would imagine?
But I've seen how Texans drive in the snow.
They just don't understand winter.
