Re: BA 777 @ LHR
Which probably means we can rule out all the obvious things. You would think with 1) a walking, talking crew 2) CVR and FDR data out the yin yang and 3) an intact (by accident investigation standards) airframe sitting in their backyard, it shouldn't take AAIB too long to figure this one out.

Re: BA 777 @ LHR
Very true David. The AAIB always likes to be very sure of events before reporting, it's in the nature of their work. Like yourself I have also seen an awful lot on a number of sites, but I think if the amounts of contamination were present as recorded then they would have had their "eureka"...

Re: BA 777 @ LHR
I'm still not convinced about contamination. It's very easy to see, would tend to congregate in the lower parts of the fuel system (sumps and filter houses) and again, both engines affected to almost the same level at the same time. It's a stretch. Certainly all fair points, Robert. What do you thi...

Re: B737 vs Concord
It's not always about it just being a single occurance. Other factors play a role, life-threatening situation, chance of a repeat or the actual integrity of original design.Going to be acid here: do you suppose an entire fleet of 737 to be modified because of ONE single occurance?

Re: B737 vs Concord
I'm not an aeronautical engineer, but I know enough to be able to guess that it's virtually impossible to protect aircraft tanks against any objects hitting them with enough energy/speed. Of course the fueltanks could be armoured and they would withstand these kinds of impact, but then that armour'...

Re: Another F15 Down (Hawaii)
It doesn't sound like the same problem. These are very complicated, rather old airframes, a fair number of things can go wrong enough to bring a ship down.

Re: B737 vs Concord
If I remember correctly, (I'll wade through a few sites later) on the 737 the combustion chamber failed causing flame and hot gas to blow through the casing. That is what punctured the tank. All the engines were NDT'd afterwards using a gamma process to photograph the insides with little dismantling...
