Re: Biz jet overflies DC, Crashes in VA mountains
I think to some degree the "automation causing problems" thing could be alleviated if there was clear annunciation to the pilot(s) what the automation was doing. For example with MCAS: "MCAS pushing down relentlessly" flashing prominently on some display. I do know one problem wi...

Re: Biz jet overflies DC, Crashes in VA mountains
ChatGPT jokes aside, this does seem like one of those places where automation could help. A computicator could monitor cabin pressure, and if it becomes clear that the cabin altitude has become excessive and the plane is not in a steep descent, initiate said descent to a safe altitude... keeping ter...

Re: Agplane augers in doing non-ag stuff, Blancolirio gets on his soapbox
I hear your stats, but I'm not sure that we can ever resolve that as you get more experience you learn things and assemble a list of things to and not_to do...a list that ideally you had as a novice, but sometimes it don't work that way. I think many also unintentionally assemble a list of things t...

Oh, that ! I still can't find my original reference, but I did find this: https://www.faa.gov/sites/faa.gov/files/regulations_policies/handbooks_manuals/aviation/FAA-H-8083-15B.pdf On page 317 (PDF viewer) or 10-26 in the actual document it states Pilots on IFR flight plans operating in VFR weather...

I think we're saying the same thing with different words... I said "approved" when "cleared" is the actual FAA-speak. I don't remember the reference I used but here is a pretty authoritative source: https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/publications/atpubs/atc_html/chap7_section_3.html

Re: Those Whacky Britts…
Correct about VFR on top being legal in the US. Not sure in Europe and UK, It is not legal in Argentina. Not sure about "significant restrictions", or any restriction whatsoever on top of the normal VFR restrictions. FYI I looked it up and to fly "VFR on top" you need to be on a...

It seems the state of the art of DIY flying cars is "not quite there yet". Except for extremely short-range operations where the car is not expected to be reused.

When we're evacuating an aircraft in an emergency, in addition to grabbing all our carry-on stuff, are we supposed to make sure the windshield wipers are turned off? https://www.sfgate.com/hawaii/article/h ... 126281.php (3rd paragraph)

Re: Those Whacky Britts…
I'd put the vast majority of the blame on ATC for this one. Yes the pilot did some things wrong, but humans in distress should not be expected to make the best decision 100% of the time... whereas ATC had a whole pile of opportunities to do the right thing and failed to do so. The most obvious thing...

Lemme guess... was this one of those "Can a passenger land an airplane" things, but they didn't have access to a sim so they tried it with an actual airplane?

All that "you can't open an airliner door because there's all these PSI holding it shut" stuff doesn't work so good when the plane's not pressurized!
