1928 Video - Manufacturing a Canadian Pacific 4-8-4

Here is an interesting 14-minute video on the construction of the then-largest locomotive in the British Empire. We often see still photographs of casting cylinders or forging side rods - pretty interestng to see the acutal process in motion. Several years ago there was some talk about restoring this locomotive - haven't heard anything recently.

That reminds me, I really should go and see how they are coming along on this project:

Been a while since I was over there, maybe tomorrow, they usually work on wednesdays.

Most amusing.
Snow fighting can be dangerous. Here is a photograph of a plow that derailed a number of years ago on a crossing where the flangeways were packed with ice. The locomotives were rescued but the plow was eventually cut up.

Oh, the ironing...

Postby 3WE » Fri Jun 22, 2012 2:19 am

Why do I see train wheels, truck parts (that's a RR car truck), and now locomotive cabs and hoods being moved down highways on semi trucks (in this case, a rubber-tired 18-wheel thayng equipped with a CB-radio and the chrome profile of a woman with big boobies on the mud flaps)?

Probably because the railroad cannot do it as timely nor as cost effective...

Correct. In the US, for low volume shipments and shorter distances a truck is more economical. Rails are far more efficient for distances of more than about 700 miles and / or for large-scale shipments. The cabs you see are probably going to the new Electro-Motive Diesel plant in Muncie Indiana while railroad wheels, axles, truck frames could be coming / going almost anywhere. Not every railroad shop locaiton has a wheel lathe to reprofile wheels so they are shipped back and forth as needed.

Here are two new locomotives from EMD/Muncie undergoing final testing before being released for service. The are both going to Norfolk Southern who is celebrating its 30th birthday by painting 30 newly-deliverd locomtives in the liveries of some of the predecessor railroads that now make up the company. These two are painted for the Wabash and Virginian companies.

Last week I had the enormous pleasure of watching Buster Keaton's "The General" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0017925/e
which is a highly enjoyable vintage railroad romp - something of an unappreciated film at the time, but (almost) universally regarded as top-notch these days.

Additionally, I learned via another route of a phenomenon in the steam age - that of crashing two locomotives together by way of spectacle. The Crash at Crush http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crash_at_Crush was one such interesting event, there were others from 1896 through to 1925.

Interesting video clips of hot boxes and a total train disaster starting at 8:20

The rest of the youtube is both interesting and boring.

Your link sucks.

Better versions of Thomas the Tank Engine were narrated by Ringo Star.

Keep that in mind for next time.

The Daylight is being moved to her new home in Portland. Old home was an active railyard and thus off-limits to the public. IIRC the new one will also be a visitor center.

Thanks for posting that photograph. Several locomotives including the SP Golden State 4449 were previously stored at the old SP Brooklyn Roundhouse which is to be torn down. Another interesting locomotive that was part of the move is this one:

Purdue guy focusing on choo-choo's, imagine that... nice pics!
you still have to find a crew willing to fly this "barely airworthy" heap
no such thing as "barely airworthy" it's either Airworthy or Not
100% incorrect Ever hear of Ferry Permit? issued for Non airworthy aircraft

Remember once when John Lennon was asked if Ringo was the best drummer in world and he replied he wasn't even the best drummer in the Beatles?
The same applies to Thomas the Tank Engine narration.

Whatever it is, it's cheaper than the new stuff with leather seats and digital avionics.

For my 5th birthday, I got a Thomas the Tank album narrated by Johnny Morris. Somewhere on youtube, someone has dubbed these albums over the more recent TV series

He's taken it out to Copalis a few times but every time we've tried to go when I was in the plane it was high tide so we couldn't land, so I've yet to land on a beach. :(
