A road tunnel in Norway has been closed - by a lorry-load of burning cheese.

About 27 tonnes of caramelised brown goat cheese - a delicacy known as Brunost - caught light as it was being driven through the Brattli Tunnel at Tysfjord, northern Norway, last week.

The fire raged for five days and smouldering toxic gases were slowing the recovery operation, officials said.

The tunnel - which is said to be badly damaged - is likely to remain closed for several weeks, they added.

"We can't go in until it's safe," geologist Viggo Aronsen told Norwegian broadcaster NRK.

Police officer Viggo Berg said the high concentration of fat and sugar in the cheese made it burn "almost like petrol if it gets hot enough".

A tunnel fire has never been so delicious.
I wonder if I still have time to go there with crackers and toasted bread...

No biggie, standard high-octane, hi-po Norwegian stuff. Now you've see what we can do just with goat milk and fish, imagine what we can do with potatoes. :o

Have you tried Norskie goat cheese? It is very sweet and has a distinctive taste. Good on freshly baked dark bread or crisp bread with a layer of real butter underneath.

Per it sounds delicious, but you must admit it's somewhat unusual for a cheese to be quite so,... frankly.. dangerous!

Any fat will burn, hence cremation works a treat with humans. I bet any fat cheese would burn given the right temperature.

Seems you have a very formidable WMD there that's clearly a threat to a democratic world. Get ready to be liberated (together with your oil), so you can finally embrace a true democracy.

Feed them to the goats so you can have more cheese? From what I remember, Norwegian potatoes due to a challenging climate are about the size of grapes.

Regrettably not (I don't think it is available here  ), but I love all kinds of cheese :D. And this one sounds particularly interesting.

There's no need for oil when you have sweet, fatty cheese .

A Norskie once thought: "If they look like grapes then I can make wine from them", and the rest is history .

Our climate is perfect for potatoes and we have a wide variety of different sizes, shapes, colours and tastes. Huge potatoes without taste we leave to Idaho and the Med. Best potaoes in the world are Norwegian, end of.
They are alsoe being turned into another WMD, Akevitt. We, the Vikings will once again ruel the world.

You mean that highly flammable and explosive organic substance, which the Norwegians are testing in their top secret underground facilities they call tunnels? I hope Hillary Clinton is already on the case.

Per, how often do you eat it? I hear it has an unusual taste... like a cheesy gummy bear.

It tastes a bit like caramel but it's not very sweet. Just a hint of sweetness. People either hate it or love it. I'm the later. Unfortunately still can't find it in Poland.

WIth that amount of sugar and fat in it, surely it can be safely vacuum packed and kept at ambient temperature - you could have it airmailed to you from some kooky export house in .NO, no?

Don't tell me - you don't like it *that* much...
