The Saga of Ancient Mariner's New Dwellings.
We bought our "new" (1979) house in October last, aiming to celebrate the Yule Tide there.
Nothing had been done to it since it was built, orange and brown carpets on every floor, wooden panels painted oker, red, brown and whatnot.
The house is built with 30 cm thick cinder blocks which is very unusual in Norway where we prefer wood and there were lots of things, including internal stairs, kitchen interior, bath room fittings and all electrickery to be changed.
Got it for a good price though, 2.5 mio petrodollars for 250 square meters, two living rooms, four bedrooms, two bathrooms, garage and 1500 square meters of dirt.
Budgeted 300.000 NOK to raise it to our exacting standards.
Ha, bloody ha!
More to follow, including pix.

Re: The Saga of Ancient Mariner's New Dwellings.
No pix yet, but it we started by tearing down a wall to enlarge the kitchen, and next was removing the kitchen fittings which meant turning of the water supply. In Norway you have to have a shut off valve inside and a main outside..................somewhere.
Went downstairs and started turning the valve, and turning, and turning, nothing. The locking pin between the stem and seat was probably broken.
Went outside to hunt for the main valve, nope. Called the local council, they will normally have it on their maps. Nothing.
The previous owner is dead and his wife at a nursing home with Alzheimer's.
No time to waste, so I decided to use my extensive expertise as a Merchant Navy Engineer.
This be the the now working setup.
I bought a new valve with dimensions roughly equal to the water meter, stripped down to underwear and removed the water meter with pressure on.
The tap water in Norway is COLD in October.
On top of that I could hardly see anything because of the spray so I had to enter the threads, and hoping I had the right ones, against the water pressure and by feel only.
Did I mention that the water was COLD ?
It was a temporary solution that allowed us to remove the kitchen, but later I had a plumber with a tool to squeeze the plastic pipe shut and to put the water meter, and a new valve back.
Just the other day while I was sweeping dirt of the street after using a belt digger to remove an old hedge, I found the main shut off valve. It had been asphalted over by some over eager road fixers. Called the local council and they came yesterday to assess the damge and come up with solutions.

The Kitchen.
Painted the ceiling and walls, new tiles on walls above benches, new kitchen, stove, extraction fan, fridge and dishwasher. Old ones given to Hells Angels' opposition. Had to use white wall-tiles in floor after removing wall. DIY expect kitchen was installed by supplier and gas by certified plumber. The dark grey wall panel had to be sanded down layers upon layers of old paint before i could spray on new. Windows require new paint, otherwise finished.

It would have been a somewhat sucky moment to discover a metric vs. imperial issue....On top of that I could hardly see anything because of the spray so I had to enter the threads, and hoping I had the right ones, against the water pressure and by feel only.
Bummer, Verbie was surely looking forward to see your ball of flame on Google Earth.DIY expect kitchen was installed by supplier and gas by certified plumber.

Indeed, that thought crossed my mind when the water hit the ceiling, which thankfully is cinder planks.

Sorry to disappoint, must be gas certified plumber by law.

Re: The Saga of Ancient Mariner's New Dwellings.
So where do I keep my Akevitt?
Depends, for top quality stuff which is best served in room temperature, see pic 2 above, pine cabinet and pic below, teak cabinet. For medium stuff, in kitchen wine fridge which maintains a steady 15C, pic 3 above, then I have a freezer/fridge next to my man cave with third degree Akevitt in the fridge and the really awful liquid, best served to unsuspecting guest and late at night, in the freezer.
What will eventually be my man cave.
Only thing I needed to do here was rip out the carpets and lay a ship deck floor and paint the walls. One window was punctured and needed replacing. All rooms were previously heated with electrical panel convector heaters, which was replaced by two air to air heater pumps/AC units.
Unfortunately I chose Haier, they did not work at all. Eventually they sent a technician from China, to fix them (ours were not the only ones), one is now working and the other needs resetting every two/three days. Just spoke to the supplier, they'll send the technician back here in May. Woohooo.
Two rooms that I am particularly proud of is the bath rooms.
This be the upper one, it is U-shaped with two entrances and a shower at the bottom of the U. Walls were spruce panels which was sanded down to bare wood except for in the shower itself were I tore down the panels and replaced them with Kebony Radiata. This is an Australian pine, shipped to Norway and treated with some kind of "sugar" solutions under very high pressure which leaves the wood dark, hard and totally resistant to water, wind and weather. It is stupidly expensive, but luckily I have a friend who works there and the factory is just 20 mins away.
I then fitted two glass doors to the shower cubicle so we can enter from each leg of the U, and new fittings.
Upstairs.
In the downstairs bathroom I ripped out all the furniture and fittings and tore down the wall between the toilet and shower and replaced it with a half glass stone wall. Nailed up Kebony, fitted a bath tub, new WC and furniture and sanded and painted the wood panel and the ceiling.
Hell of a job for a small room. Pleased with the result. Just need to make a bench out of the Kebony remains to keep wifey happy.
Must work, more later,

Nice house and Akkevit procedures noted (although I think I have some outsider objections)...
...BUT...
...what do we have out the windows? Beautiful, stark artic-like mountains and valleys? Or an airport with an unobstructed view with which to take jet pictures? Clothing-optional beach?

Re: The Saga of Ancient Mariner's New Dwellings.
On further review, I see that Per did provide some pictures of the view from the windows. However, those views were horribly over exposed and not suitable for acceptance to outthewindophotos.net (probably also problems with dust spots and cropping and composure...all the usual stuff)Typical Norwegian landscape, of course:...BUT...

Probably the stupidest 62 year old amateur plumber of the year. Good thing no video camera/phone nearby.I guess this makes you an International Super Genius Plummer of the Millennium.

Can be solved.
...BUT...
The house is in a cul-de-sac, total 10-12 houses so very nice and quiet, ski/jogging/walking/biking tracks pass the house....what do we have out the windows? Beautiful, stark artic-like mountains and valleys? Or an airport with an unobstructed view with which to take jet pictures? Clothing-optional beach?
View from living room.
Farm across the street, no animals though. My boat trailer.
Garage, and stuff. Working inside at the moment.
Rear. Waiting from permission from local council to cull the forest. Problem are large oaks which in Norway are protected and the fact that is an Viking burial mound with a settlement nearby.

Re: The Saga of Ancient Mariner's New Dwellings.
This is to the Boss' liking , and specification. My wallet is still crying salty tears.
The "art" on the walls came with the house, very 70/80'ies. Made by a well know designer/ceramist at the slightly famous Porsgrunn Porcelain.
We intended to remove it, but then I googled his name. It is also plastered onto the walls so...
Wife not so happy with my office, but I am working on it.
In, what is now my office was the drain pipes from the kitchen, hot and cold water pipes to the kitchen and a pipe for outdoor water as well as the electrical distribution cabinet.
I put up walls around it and fitted a door.
Since the room was large enough, I thought at the time, I sectioned it off and made a walk in closet for the wife. She's happy, and now my office is too small.

Re: The Saga of Ancient Mariner's New Dwellings.
Now for the living room.
Again, removed the damn carpet, hell of a job, glued on. Sanded down panel and spray painted ceiling and walls. Bought a new Bosch electrical paint sprayer for that. Worked well(ish).
A huge wood burner/oil burner was fitted, when removed there was a large gap in the slaith. Had to copy the original work to make it blend it. Part of the floor underneath the old burners was also covered in slaith. Removed that and used it to fill in the wall. New fire place flue gas pipes didn't fit the chimney pipe. Filled in and new hole made.
Put ash on the floor, ash also used for dining, made by the same guys who made the stairs, also ash. Great guy, two brothers and their ancient father. Their workshop is in an old barn, fantastic place, the smell should be canned and sold. Could not find ash dining room chairs so went for beechwood.
Must run, have to take No. 2 daughter shopping, she hand surgery to one hand yesterday and can not drive car, nor carry croceries.
Oh joy!
