Is raising the minimum rage a good idea?

Postby Giles » Sat Jul 25, 2009 2:33 pm

The obvious benefit is more money for those making minimum wage.

However, others say that employers will have to eliminate positions because they will have to pay extra. Also, states that are in a financial crunch / deficit will have an increased burden on their budgets because of the federal increase in the minimum wage.

Discuss.

I rather think many people on a minimum wage may be venting maximum rage.

Anyway, it's economics 101 : if you mandate a higher price for labor without any equivalent return in increased production, you will reduce demand for labor and you will not reduce unemployment, particularly in marginal jobs where the minimum wage is more common. That said, there may be wider social/community benefits from a minimum wage, eg. attempting to reduce growing income inequality, adding more spending power on the part of low-paid employees.

Beyond this, I have generally felt that what's really limiting job creation in the middle to low incomes is the payroll tax.

I think what is limiting job creation in this sector is the unlimited recession caused by the unlimited risks taken by those on unlimited wages which the country is having to bail out with an unlimited amount.

Well, we can always have a different discussion about the wider economic issues which confront us in dealing with the recession.

I guess it all depends if the raising takes place in China or in the USA.

Let me put it this way,in the form of an analogy to help you understand.; say you design an aeroplane using a computer programme and the aeroplane falls apart under testing well before it was predicted to do so because the engineers don't understand the material or know what their doing, is the computer at fault or the engineers?

Higher minimum wage means less tax money wasted on food stamps and other subsidies for WalMart employees.

As someone said, maybe it would be good if China raised the minimum rage.

Well, they don't have a minimum wage, but assuming they did, and they raised it, how in your opinion would that add to the sum of human happiness (or American happiness) without rage ?

Fabulous album with a very disturbing cover. Always gives me the heebie-jeebies. But it definitely fits the band to a tee, so I understand why they chose it.

My daughter thinks she's going to be the next Tom Morello. (Well, that is when she doesn't think she's going to be the next JK Rowling or the first female president, but I digress). We were listening to "Killing in the Name" in the car the other day. She likes their music, but doesn't really listen to the lyrics yet (which is a good thing with an 11-year old and RATM, but I digress again). I was about to turn it off because it got to the part where Zack just screams "F*ck you, I won't do what you tell me" over and over again, but I noticed it hadn't even registered with her, so I just let it go.

Brilliant! And I should've thought of it myself.

Help you, I'll sure do what you tell me!

Forgot to add the 2nd sentence. Here they are again.

From latest GDP numbers. Today's GDP vs 1929's.

At the current rate we have 46% of a 1929 type depression.

I find it very disconcerting, that before Sept 2008, the big US military complex didn't seem to have advised Bush2, at all, about the upcoming world economic collapse !??????

They could at least watch utube and do a search for Peter Schiff, "Dr Doom", or other.
