3BS Remembers "The Penalty Box"

Postby 3WE » Tue Apr 30, 2019 8:43 pm

Is it my imagination that KORD used to have a hold pad that was actually labeled as "The Penalty Box". I see they have a "Scenic Hold Pad".

I also think I recall "The Penalty Box" being used elsewhere as a term: "Global 124, Sorry, but you have to go to the penalty box...taxi to the Papa pad, XYZ airport has put a ground hold for at least 40 minutes....."

I enjoyed that term as it had a truth+humor aspect- You were sent there and not allowed to play airplane pilot for a number of minutes until you got clearance...

Bottom line questions: Was there actually a hold pad named "The Penalty Box" and is that phrase ever used anymore in a general sense when aircraft are sent to holding pads?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for pointing that out. Stared at an online diagram for several minutes yesterday before posting.

I was also surprised to see the technical demise of former mega-runway 14R-32L- especially after they did all the pretty green stuff to highlight the shortened version of it. (Actually it's interesting to see that the OTHER 14-32 no longer exists either).

The elimination of 14/32s was part of the bigger "ORD realignment project" from a few years back which also saw the addition of 10R/28L South of the cargo terminals as well as occasional use of 4L for departures. It seems to have worked, the former Charlie Foxtrots have become much more of a rarity.
