Left seat, right seat, left stick, right stick

Postby 666 » Wed Apr 30, 2014 7:46 pm

Sticks on the sides, keypads and throttles in the middle, most people are right handed, some are left handed.

Left/right-handed cockpit crew combos come in every flavor mathematically possible. So what happens if - ergonomics-wise - it would make more sense for the captain to take the right seat and send the slave pilot to the left.

Does they switch, or does the captain always butt the left seat 'cos that's the natural target of the nympho flight attendants no matter how many stripes the occupant has?

You bring up an interesting point (and not just about the nymphos).

In my experience, most crewmembers are only qualified in one seat at a time, although there are exceptions. At my previous airline all Captains were also right-seat qualified, which was done due to the company having staffing issues and by having the Captains dual-qualified the airline was able to sometimes assign two Captains to a flight, when they couldn't find an F/O. F/Os, however, were right-seat qualified only. Another exception would be check airmen, who are usually dual-qualified also, in order to conduct both new-hire and Captain upgrade training.

So, to answer your question, no, seat swapping does not normally take place.

Does that mean that there are physical differences in the dash board lay out between the starboard and port side?
