Is there any particular set of circumstances in which you would consider disengaging the autopilot (any of them) during cruise while going through turbulence?
Also, would you always request a deviation if you are faced with a Cumulonimbus cloud (which I assume carry a lot of turbulence) straight ahead?
Thanks.

Re: Autopilot
Yes and yes. If you tell an autopilot to hold altitude, it will do all it can do to keep you there. Sometimes in mountain wave it's better to get a block altitude from ATC and go with the flow. For just plain getting beat to death the same idea idea applies. Some autopilots allow you to disengage the elevator control while maintaining aileron control. Never been in turbulence (in a plane with an autopilot) that bad, but there are times just keeping upright is a full time job.

You're not a Freight Dawg unless you've shot the ILS to 23L at KYIP in a transport category aircraft no longer used in passenger service. You're OG if it had a tailwheel or BMEP gauges.

You say that, but then I am always impressed at how close planes will fly to big towering cumulus clouds- including clear thunderstorms.CBs just scream "Run away, run far away."
I will confess that it's hard/impossible to judge distances when you are a "lowly passenger" up high in the sky, but do you really give them the AIM-recommended 20-mile "wide berth"
I've read a lot of comments on planes and rain/thunderstorms- the answer is always- yes we avoid them as much as we can, but there comes a time at a busy airport when traffic is busy and you are lining up to land.
The next comment is- we have a very good safety record, but there are those rare incidents of planes falling out of the sky due to the storms.......

I can attest to the fact that at least most, usually all airlines will deviate close to 20 miles around a large cell, I've never actually measured it as they were going by, but quite often they give it a wide berth.
So take care of it
