"Warning Walls" South end, East Runways @ DFW

Postby 3WE » Sat Aug 15, 2015 1:31 am

Would Flyboy or Dummy please explain why there's relatively large red and white striped walls at the South End of the two long East-Side runways?

Given that those are really long runways and that DFW is surrounded by fairly gentle terrain- just what is it that requires such a "dire" warning. I do not see the logic. (Additionally, I do not see similar walls on the East Side, nor any of the North ends.

I know there's a newer "ATL-style" end-around taxiway, but again, if someone runs off the end, I'm just not sure I see where those walls provide any real safety.

Are they in-fact "structurally strong arresting walls" so some over run doesn't take out a taxiing aircraft????...

....again, I don't see much logic...the odds of veering off the side and taking out a taxiing aircraft seem to be a good bit higher than not being able to stop in 8000 feet (including 2000 feet off pavement).

...nor have I seen such things at Atlanta...(although now I'm curious and wondering if I need to look harder.)

Thanks in advance.

Probably because somebody made some decent money by putting them there. Funny thing is I don't remember noticing them, perhaps because we never make it anywhere near the end on either 17C or 17R. I'll be sure to take a look next time I'm down there, which should be the end of this month.

1) A very good answer, thanks.

2) You can't miss them with any sort of normal Texas visibility, they are big.

3) Possibly something to do with In The Shade, and that, culturally, Dallas isn't really in Texas, whereas Ft. Worth is?

4) I found them on Google Earth (you really only see the shadow and not the red/white stripes), they are just inside of a service road, but a pretty good distance from the end-around taxiway...possibly at the edge of a dirt embankment dropoff?

5) Please do take a look and comment back. Given your "never anywhere near the end" comment, the purpose of these these things is questionable.

...Don't know how I didn't notice them before...
1. For starters, you were not paid enough to notice them before.

2. Given that you never really noticed them before, underscores my original question...I just don't see where they make any meaningful contribution to safety- especially if departing/landing pilots with a FRONT window don't really notice them.

3. Your lack of further comment also indicates that their value may be questionable.

4. I concur, they certainly look cool, and should probably be built for all the other runways at DFW solely for that reason.

Thanks for taking note and your reply and indeed we really should improve regional pay.

If its what I'm thinking of, they reduce the risk of departing aircraft hitting the brakes because they think an aircraft is crossing down the end of the runway, when what they see is an aircraft on the end-around taxiway http://www.tc.faa.gov/act4/insidethefen ... axiway.htm

A logical explanation with facts and links... that's no fun!

Thanks though, and that pic looks like what I saw.

well I had hoped to give a personal insight but yesterdays A380 landing for me was on the other side of the field, and I had to stow the monitor with TailCam footage for landing. (whats the point of TailCam if you can't use it for take-off and landing). All I got was a quick glimpse form my taxi.

After passing through ATL last week, I observed that it did_not have the red and white striped wall between the departure end of 26L and the end-around taxiway...

Oh the ironing...they supposedly develop it for ATL (per reubee's link) and the damn Texans have to have it first (and probably make it bigger too).

Was just at DFW again last night. Those things actually look like they're almost off airport property.

This is Texas, not Midway, Chicago...

A few weeks ago, my flight landed on 18 Left Left Left and we did the full blown-end-around taxi...they are kind of huge (and indeed a LONG way beyond the runways)

That would have been 17L, but carry on.
