Where next for airdisaster.info?
Hello chaps.
This place is an echo chamber for the wild and wonderful goings on of around ten years ago, on the ad.com main board that we all remember. We have around 40 folks who visit the site regularly to catch up and shoot the shit from time to time -but essentially this place is a mothball now. We've seen <5 signups of value in the last few years.
Hosting costs are minimal. The domain costs $12 a year. I spend about 3 hours a month doing maintenance (backups, pruning).
I am happy to maintain the site in its current format without any desperate requirement to inject new blood. I've done no marketing, SEO or content management - happy to maintain it as a fun place (kinda like an old man's bar) going forward. But I'm keen to know your views.
Happy to offer it up for the AD massif for a view.
Cheers!

Wait, this is not a shemale porn site? I've been wasting my time all this years!
Maybe new users could bring a little bit of activity. (I wonder if 3WE can convince Evanie, TeeieVeeie and BoingieBobbieie to come over here? ). Perhaps we should un-ban Verbie's beloved Martinatink .

Why can't we select multiple options?
I favor giving AM a blog, and 3WE a red pen. Also dancing girls... all websites should have dancing girls.

Re: Where next for airdisaster.info?
1. Thanks Monchie for your ongoing efforts and concern.
2. What is the red pen that you'll give me? (I assume it was a being banned). If it's anything BUT being banned, I'm not overly interested.
3. I do not have any great ideas for membership. I actually invited Snyder Snapshots over, but he didn't join (you know, we're not liked by photographers that much and vice versa). I wonder if Boeing Bobby would come- then again, to see him get crosswise with V-Nav-V and ATL Crew... then again, there's the theory that he's ITS or someone role playing as a curmudgeony semi-senile or even fake 747 super guppy pilot.
3.5. Our purpose/reason for existence is a strange one- Half serious- half humorous, not interested in snot nosed garbage (that you unfortunately see at PPRUNE). We have lots of competition- Flight aware discussion forums seem quite lively (and loaded with junk). And the neighboring forum where your photo accepted count equals your expertise level.
4. Flyboy recently asked rhetorically- what did happen to EVERYONE...the place has simply dried up. Monchie- you say there's 40 folks "active"...ok why aren't they active. No one wants to post anything or continue a thread. Sometimes for no good reason a thread will get some life. I am aware that we are a tad too crazy and irreverent for Gabriel and he has some bitterness that his early stall rants were dismissed. And wow- Ardvark2zz posted in the past week??? If we do have 40 of the original bunch alive and logging on from time to time- that SHOULD support a nice conversation- if they would simply participate. I also stand behind what I told Flyboy- industry is now a bit into speech control on your personal social media (not saying that's not valid)...I'm not sure how comfortable our Boeing employees are (includes Purdue Pilot now, does it not?), Dummy's pretty quiet and ITD did his big *POOF* Still amazed that I have never read the words, "ITS says Hi" here.
5. Indeed the Internet and Facebook and all of that has lost it's luster. Turn off the computer, get out and get some sunshine. I see that at Facebook, I see that here, Heck even JP is shrinking to Gabriel-Evan-TeeVee, Brian, ELaw and Me.
I do thank Not_Karl, Eric, Flyboy and J (and probably an omission or two) for the attempts to keep this place alive-albeit in critical condition.
Finally, I don't like the idea of she-male and other such perversion- Plain old fashioned soft-core stuff seems to be such an under-served area.

Re: Where next for airdisaster.info?
One thing I miss a lot is the possibility to UPLOAD pictures (to be displayed in a thread). I know it takes server space but, right now, uploading to a site like Flickr or whatever, although free, is not appealing. Also, some site are not permanent, which means many posts now have dead links to vanished pictures...
Otherwise, although I do not post as ofter as in the past, I'm here EVERY day to read new posts (and sometimes oldies).
I like the half-seriousness <-(is this a word?) of the site, Monchavo, keep the good work.
Edited to add: I would have selected " Keep it exactly as it is now" but the photo thing makes it a "change" so I didn't click any selection.

I understood that and that was exactly my point...re: the statement of "40". Not all of them post. Many stop by simply to check PMs or to look when there's a big event (a tier 1 crash).
I wish those 40 would provide a modicum of discussion, as opposed to near-zero discussion and ONLY checking PM's and only READING about bigger events.

Re: Where next for airdisaster.info?
I am Red Cross First-Aid trained and not_retired.Are you a retired paramedic by any chance?
I do not_disclose this to flight crews nor do I make offers of assistance if something happens.
But, if something did indeed happen:
1) Check the scene for safety.
2) Call 9-11 (because the truth is you can provide only the most minimal of meaningful health care).
3) "Hi, I'm 3BS, I'm Red-Cross-First-Aid trained....may I assist you?
4) Not_Karl, go get me the AED from further up the boarding gates, I think I'd like to shock this guy- just to be mean.
Perhaps we need a new sub-forum where folks with lowly First-Aid training pass judgment on the performance of paramedics (and Doctors).
This, of course begs the question of how Brian, TeeVee, and Flyboy are analogous to ITS, Dummy and Flyboy with respect to discussion thread dynamics. I'm also trying to envision what the equivalents of Gabriel and Evan would do in a medical response discussion.

Next time you reply to a post, check the "Upload attachment" tab. The feature works and has never been disabled as far as I can tell. It may be the new skin that has confused you.One thing I miss a lot is the possibility to UPLOAD pictures (to be displayed in a thread).

Re: Where next for airdisaster.info?
Not sure if I count as one of those, but here's what I perceive as the situation: there is little or no technical discussion because there's little or no technical discussion material posted, and that which is posted receives little followup or substantive commentary. I think there are two reasons for this: one is that several of the most knowledgeable people have wandered away (probably just randomly) and not replaced (with new knowledgeable people) because this site has little or no visibility; but the other is that people who post technical material with less than perfect grasp, or even fine grasp but less than perfect form, get mocked and driven off. That discourages everyone else who isn't sure of their ground. And in particular, the discussion you're probably missing most, the informed speculation about wrecks and the serious discussion of safety issues, dries up under these conditions, because it relies on people being willing/able to post ideas and conjectures.I wish those 40 would provide a modicum of discussion, as opposed to near-zero discussion and ONLY checking PM's and only READING about bigger events.
I'm not saying we need a new influx of bozos who think everyone should wear life vests for takeoff. Things have gone too far the other way, though.
Re: Where next for airdisaster.info?
The difficulty I have is that without those with the technical knowledge and insightful commentary, the "rasion d'etre" of the site is simply an echo chamber for what went before. It's a bit of a catch-22 situation really.

"those with the technical knowledge" (and those with marginal knowledge) have also matured a bit. The phrase "wait for the final report" does carry a heavy load of conversation-limiting truth and the rules on exactly how much speculation is acceptable are complex....those with the technical knowledge and insightful commentary...
That being said, I also think E-Law's post about how the press has done so little to inform us of the routine near-total-tortoise disasters would fit in here.

Re: Where next for airdisaster.info?
I like the fact that numbers are limited as it means there is a bit of personality behind all the comments. One of the interesting things is seeing the same names on other forums, although I'm not sure how Per came to be on one of the Australia/NZ sub-forums on PPrune commenting on batteries in a Russell Crowe thread a few days ago !!!
If you want to get more traffic, I suspect you'd need to somehow generate more content in the Safety Discussion forum, perhaps a new thread for every Accident or Crash as seen in AvHerald http://www.avherald.com/h?list=&opt=7168, without infringing their copyright.

Can I just say that as admin I have never quashed speculation and welcome debate (both hot-headed and reasoned) about the causes of accidents.

Re: Where next for airdisaster.info?
Correct. Can I just say that as admin I have never quashed speculation and welcome debate (both hot-headed and reasoned) about the causes of accidents.
My original comment is that now that we are all older, there's some self-quashing (and our nice, hands-off Mods (you and your predecessor) are not actively quashing anything).
These days we wait a little longer and let a few more facts come out before firing up the ass-hat-speculative-parlour talk. (Sometimes we wait a LOT longer). "Wait for the final report" is a powerful comment with some truth.
And no foul there- Rampant speculation with no facts is not quality discussion.
Now, is there a hidden question of 'hostility' vs. 'freedom of speech' that pervades all discussion boards (I LOL at how a camper forum and sports forums and current affairs forums I participate in and little discussions below news articles...they all have the same types of players).
I have evolved into more of a troll in my older age, and do always enjoy when others are 'quality' trolls. That doesn't mean that I don't detest 'pure trolls' who focus more on personal attacks and one-sided comments. And yeah, I stirred some crap by making non-PC comments about women pilots and kind of got Ocelot worked up.
And, ugly posts sometimes inspires an opposite-feeling, "love-fest" co-hort that feels that discussion fora must be happy places- totally free of negativity...and that mean environments scare people off. Indeed, that other place calls itself "the friendly way to fly" (and I've laughed when I've read folks complain that it isn't).
I've lived both sides- Flyboy has been rough on me a time or two and I shyed away (probably at ad.kilroy.com). That being said, it's just an expletive discussion forum, Listen, Learn, Laugh (and I actually deserved Flyboy's Flames). I now thank Flyboy for may good aviation learning's (even though I have a LONG way to go to claim any competence). Part of me hopes that pisses him off, but another part of suspects he's proud to teach people- even though he doesn't want to teach me and wishes I'd shut up .
And when Evan (or someone else) makes a post calling pilots cowboys or dropping lots of acronyms or stating how simple the procedure is to not crash...I swear the boy's from upper-cast-India and has never driven a car so he has no concept of how a person can make a mistake.
I concur with Reubee that I don't want this place getting huge our losing it's 'personality'. Still, when there's a NEAR TOTAL LACK OF DISCUSSION!!! on typical topics, that's sad.
I also sort of like Reubee's suggestion that maybe we start a thread when there's a discussion worthy incident at av-herald (I disagree that we have a thread for anything/everything that makes the av-herald, but indeed we can bring forward the interesting ones).
I'll make the 'glorious dig deep' extra effort to start threads when I see Gabie post a good one over there...but
1) Will anyone participate in some discussion?
and
2) Will others start posting threads of interest?
I still go back to Monchie's stats that there's 40 or so of us "regularly visiting", but I still think more of "them" could actually participate.

Re: Where next for airdisaster.info?
I'm 55, a tad chunky, have a bushy mustache with some gray hair, wear wire rim glasses, once flew a single engine aircraft and have no business moderating an aviation forum. I was never a paramedic, but I do have red cross first aid training and would probably help the crew out if needed (but won't be telling folks that ahead of time)...Oh, and I'd PREFER to help land the plane...I'd rather not_assist with first aid.
Based on the solid qualifications above, give me the keys, a red pen, some moderately-detailed directions and I will declare myself a super moderator and assist (irregularly) with deleting spam and banning spammers along with grandiose threats.
I can also offer extremely subjective, inconsistent opinions on the worthiness of photographs.

It's aviation related AND makes for a great, cryptic acronym.
