Just because nobody was hurt doesn't mean this particular set of compromises was satisfactory.
Safety is always a set of compromises. (Like trading a few dollars of savings on a redundant system for a system that allows a single point of failure, such as a single fiber optic line, to cut off ATC communications. )The outage began about 3:30 p.m. CDT when a car in Memphis struck a utility pole and severed a fiber-optic cable, FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said, adding air safety was not compromised.
