I know Brianie sees this as clearly off target...however, I think there's significant cross-relevance...so there!

Re: Self-driving Uber Car Total Disaster
We should not discard CB monkeying, erroneous use of driving modes for the current phase of the drive and confusion between Volvo's XC90-200 and XC90-236A capabilities.
That said, let's wait for the final report.

The problem was the Eurotrash livery.

On a more serious note (man, it's hard to get more serious than the previous posts), this type of accident is something that may be impossible to avoid for a human but may be possible to avoid for autonomous cars. Technologies like radar, ultrasound and LIDAR don't depend on lighting conditions. They can literally see in the dark (and some through the fog too).

There will be no more cars. There will only be autonomous mobility solutions.

Also apparently this week another Tesla ploughed while on autopilot.
Re: Self-driving Uber Car Total Disaster
...because cowboy monkey drivers don't understand (or care) how autopilot works.
Hmm, why does this seem familiar?

Bizarre accident. The driver appears to have been using the car as one would ride a train. With no regard to the conducting of the vehicle! Also apparently this week another Tesla ploughed while on autopilot.

Pseudo Final Report:
https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/feds ... 04038.html
Let's see if I have this right:
You have an automatic emergency braking system that operates when the human is driving.
But, when the computer is driving, the automatic emergency braking system is disabled, depending on the driver to do the braking?
And- even though the emergency braking system is monitoring and processing conflicts, it does not notify the driver.
Brill-Yunt! and cue the classic 1950s pilot disdain for engineers.
And, we see that fairly well trained pilots like Hui Thieu Lo and Ho Leigh Phouc confuse how all the different systems interact in this mode and that mode, and we expect taxi drivers to be able to handle it too.
And, it should also be noted (for the zillionth time) that Hui Thieu Lo, Ho Leigh Phouc and Unnamed Uber Driver also failed at the basic requirements to monitor some basic crap like Airspeed and "The Road Ahead".
Trying to decide if I should post this there and how best to razz Evan about the automation/human interface and procedures and training and scientific engineering...

Uber relies on a human backup driver to intervene
The look on that woman's face* suggests that intervening was not the first thing on her mind.
* and the fact the car hit the pedestrian

Re: Self-driving Uber Car Total Disaster
The on-board video (which should of course, be installed in cockpits since us outsiders think it's a good idea), clearly shows that she was not doing that basic thing you are supposed to do when on autopilot...monitor basic stuff since we just cant quite totally trust the automation...The look on that woman's face* suggests that intervening was not the first thing on her mind.Uber relies on a human backup driver to intervene
* and the fact the car hit the pedestrian
While dramatic, the shocked look isn't really primary to the analysis...it's the video of her messing with her phone just before the oh crap moment.
Would it be better if I say, WE knew this sort of thing would happen sooner or later- would you consider yourself in THAT group.
