Re: Interesting (recent) total air disasters
Wake turbulence damages a house. Isn't there any rule banning houses from flying closely behind big aeroplanies?

Fascinating.Wake turbulence damages a house.
I wonder if it was really wake turbulence? I guess if the weather was otherwise gentle and you use that speculative method called Occam's razor, you are left with the big, heavy aeroplanie generating a serious $hitstorm by plowing through the air and keeping itself afloat.
Thank you for that most-unusual, but thought-provoking post.
Another reason to ban ALL airplanes!

Re: Interesting (recent) total air disasters
Seems to be (4); someone else captured the behavior on the ground and there's been an AD.(3) it wasn't an uncommanded reverse at all but the pilots did it on purpose, presumably to try to clear the developing condition (in which case wtf? but it's certainly plausible); or (4) the pilots issued some other prop pitch command and the wrong thing reached the engines. Given that the throttles were apparently advanced at the same time this happened, (3) or (4) seems more likely...

Another case of dangerous cabin odors and fumes: Some days ago, a Transavia flight from Las Palmas to Amsterdam made an "emergency" (so says the media) landing at Faro because of a smelly passenger.

It would appear we should ban all overhead bins...Flyboy even concurred, somewhat.
Still, banning aircraft is probably incrementally better.

Nordwind A321 nose first, hard landing results in some bent and broken cheap composites. Aircraft went around and made a succesful landing. Interesting bit (apart from the jetphoto of the landing gear penetrating the cabin floor): tempering of the black boxes by the airline and its contractors (moved from the aeroplanie to a warehouse, flown as luggage, installed on another aeroplanie, overwritten, CVR from an uneventful flight installed in bent aeroplanie... ).

Aeronav L-410 at Qansax Dheere, Somalia, lands with bullet holes on its fuselage and wings. This aeroplanie survived a mid-air collision with another L-410 in 2004 (the other Let crashed).

CS300 uncontained engine (PW1524G) failures with a software update as a contributory factor:

Add to that the A400M crash caused by the fuel supply management software, a couple of IrAn-140 crashes where engine management systems were contributory factors, MCAS, pilots fighting automation, etc. and I think we have more than enough reasons to ban ALL computers and software on aeroplanies.A primary contributor to the failure mode was an electronic engine control (EEC) software update that changed the LPC vane schedule and increased the likelihood of LPC stage 1 IBR blade flutter onset within the engine operating range.

-Emirates A380 blows tire on takeoff at Dubai and puts big hole on cheap-composite fairing, continues flight to Brisbane.
-TAP A330 starts take-off run from an intersection, but use full runway lenght for flex takeoff computations. Full thrust saves the day and the aeroplanie takes off with no runway to spare. I've said it before and will say it again: flex temp (and fatigued cowmonkeypilot stupidity) will lead to a TAD!!!! sooner or later and should be banned.

Norwegian Air Sweden Boeing 737-800 in Sweden. They should inflate them to 3000PSI, then a couple of PSI less or more wouldn't make a difference. It never ceases to amaze me the degree to which the inflation level of sportsballs influences goings-on in the world... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deflategate

Re: Interesting (recent) total air disasters
I suspect the only reason this one is different from any other excursion is that the airport is small enough that when you run off the runway you end up on the ramp.
Also, they got off easy in that collision...

Alaska B738, landing gear punches through wing on landing.
AvieHeraldie entry with PuncturedWingPhotos.Postaccident examination of the airplane revealed that the MLG aft trunnion pin had fractured. The aft end of the left MLG had traveled up, puncturing the composite panels, and protruded out and above the wing’s surface. The MLG walking beam was also protruding above the surface of the wing.
It's clear to us which the actual culprits are. The trunnion pin story is clearly a cover-up.

2x shortened runway overruns
https://avherald.com/h?article=50e9e608&opt=0A Malaysian Airlines Airbus A330-300 (...) was departing Melbourne's temporarily shortened runway 34 when the aircraft rotated past the temporarily displaced runway end, the jet blast affected people and objects in the working area past the displaced runway end.
https://avherald.com/h?article=50e9e456&opt=0A Bamboo Airways Boeing 787-9 (...) was departing Melbourne's temporarily shortened runway 34 when the aircraft rotated past the temporarily displaced runway end, the jet blast affected people and objects in the working area past the displaced runway end.
Apart from both flights departing from the same shortened runway, another common factor is both aeroplanies being cheap-composite-crackerboxes.
Proposed solutions:
-Ban ALL cheap-composite-crackerboxes, independent of manufacturer.
-Ban ALL runway shortenings.
-Ban ALL shortenings in general.

An Avion Express Airbus A320-200, registration LY-NVL performing flight X9-8242 from Milan Bergamo (Italy) to Vilnius (Lithuania), landed on Vilnius' runway 19 at about 14:19L (12:19Z) but veered right off the runway onto soft ground, went across a turnoff and returned onto the runway centerline at about 5 knots over ground. The aircraft subsequently vacated the runway via the next turn off and taxied to the apron

Re: Interesting (recent) total air disasters
Hmm. A thin layer of water on the runway appears to provide poor braking action. Mud, on the other hand, stops the plane quickly.
Clearly the lesson here is when it's raining, large quantities of dirt should be dumped on the runway to improve braking.

This is our fault. Soft field landings call for a somewhat relentless, but still carefully-measured, pull up.
