Postby rattler » Wed Feb 06, 2008 6:19 pm

Anyone heard about this one yesterday, Google doesnt yield?

From a friend heard a GA plane tried an emer landing after powr out on a soccer field finding it crowded with kids training and so decided to just crash outside it into a vine yard, killing both occupants...

From what I understood in the article it seems that your friend is right.

If the occupants of the plane were killed how does one know that they made a conscious choice to bypass the field because of the children playing there?

Dont know, but the article states that they went S/R approaching the soccer field and then according to cited witnesses changed course (slightly: "raised the nose") to land behind it.

My deliberate first guess is that they were on rather low approach speed and couldnt control their landing properly (vineyards dont immideately sound fatal for an emer landing) and simply stalled when suddenly having to make their approach longer. Note that at time of accident SS (and heavy humidity/fog yesterday night), so probably the lights of the soccer field attracted them from a distance.

Just speculating,

Sounds reasonable to me, rattler. I find we always get hysterical people after air crashes talking about the heroic pilots who did "everything they could" to avoid hitting houses/children/hospitals/puppies/whatever.

Perhaps this pilot did try to stretch his glide to avoid endangering others, but unless he reported it as such, I'm just not keen to believe the eyewitnesses.

Snip

Couldn't agree more. Best one I've heard was when a RAAF F 111 blew up to a million pieces and more over northern NSW. 'The crew died avoiding crashing into a school'. Incidently, if memory serves me right, the Captain was the youngest pilot the RAAF had at the time.

I don't have a plan........therefore nothing can go wrong.....
