I haven't seen it noted here, but our local rag had a tiny blurb that the Smithsonian confirmed that they were Canada geese.
The geese were only doing what many Canadians do when the snow fly's,leaving!

Happy you finally figured out that data can't give opinions.

In that case, it very well known when one writes specs, you'll have to define wrong, is it: 1000 km accuracy, 1 km, 1 meter, 1 micron, plank's constant.....?

Wow, you're quoting yourself. Now, that's a real authoritative TV "expert". ;)

Finger stutter problem ? Write it one more time

I'm honored that you stalk my posts. 0:18 after my post. Almost as good as angryboy2548.

Again, to be scientifically correct, you'll have to give your definition of wrong, regarding the map.

I agree Advark2zz's chart is accurate according to the data used. The data however is suspect as the aircraft was in the water when the data indicated the aircraft was airborne.

See, Don wrote it succinctly ..... at touchdown: indicated-altitude <> water-altitude.

The last time I was in NYC (admittedly a few years ago) the surface of the Hudson river was affected by the oceans tides. I doubt the surface of the river is than a few inches different from sea level.

This is not so sure anymore: IMINT gathered on the Hudson lately seems to suggest that there was an evil Canadian Geese Terrorist plot behind the suicidal moves:

Read an article in Popular Mechanics which suggested that the engines on the A-320 are designed to shut down upon command of the onboard computers if they detect that damage or a malfunction in the engine is severe enough. The article suggested that this is why the engines on 1549 shut down, and suggests that had it not been for this commanded shutdown, the engines may have been capable of continuing to produce at least partial power.

Interesting theory I thought.

More on the suspicious geese:

Image
...The Iraqi geese, hell-bent on jihad, flew into the right engine of flight 1549 from LaGuardia to Charlotte, NC, sending it straight into the Hudson River.

All 150-ish passengers aboard the flight have made it out alive and are safe on land, much to the chagrin of the leader goose, Osama bin Honkin.

The threat level has been raised from orange to black, brown and white. Stay tuned for more information as the story develops.

I am pretty sure that this captain is the type of guy that always has a plan B up his sleeve. What if my engines pack up now? Or when I am over there? What if this gets stuck? What if that becomes in/op. What if... all the time.
I would not be surprised if he has mentally ditched his plane many times before in that particular piece of river.
John, I salute you!

NTSB has released the CVR transcript as part of today's public hearing:

And, for those who wondered whether attempting LGA or TEB would have been better ideas, my quick skim of the following indicates that it was possible (but barely and probably not likely in real-world conditions).

These days it seems a CVR isn't complete unless there is some comment about employment conditions
HOT-2 wonder how the Northwest and Delta pilots are gettin on.

HOT-1 I wonder about that too, I have no idea.

CAM [sound similar to power interruption]

CAM [sound similar to increase in engine
noise/frequency]

HOT-1 yeah hopefully better than we and West do
HOT-2 be hard to do worse.
and I didn't expect to see a cellphone in the cockpit whilst taxying
