Huge dark cloud desends over Britiain

Postby Sickbag » Thu Apr 15, 2010 8:26 am

Yes its Gordon Brown appearing on the televised prime minister debates!

Actually its a Icelandic volcano's ash plume stopping flights

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/travel ... 098058.ece
Tens of thousands of airline passengers face travel chaos today after volcanic ash from an eruption in Iceland has forced three airports to shut and brought heavy disruption to others.

Airports in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow were shut this morning and five easyJet flights that were due to take off from Stansted were ground due to massive visibility problems.

At Gatwick, 106 flights were cancelled with heavy disruptions expected to follow later today. All flights from Manchester airport have been disrupted.

Newcastle and Belfast are also affected, according to reports, as is Birmingham airport.

Arnis Thorjoddsir from the Icelandic National Television Agency reports "black snow" on the west side of the glacier.

If this eruption continues for extended periods it occurs to me that it might significantly impact travel on a long term basis across this region of the atlantic! Hmmhm!

Update is that UK airspace will be closed 12:00-1800 :(

It is now. Disregard the PM unless you're going to try for tomorrow.

I thought the problem with ash was that it eats your plane, a la BA009.

We should urge NATO to launch a full scale attack on Iceland if this continues.

That explains it. If the facts are too boring, too complicated, or too inconvenient, then it's okay to make up your own.

Huge dark cloud desends over Britiain
Volcano or current/future PM, wait until that monster actually descends (de-sending is bad enough already, what I am doing every morning after sending UI, how do coulds do it?)!

Seriously, here in Spain on the news they only quote (and show) really super angry self loading freight at the brink of starting a revolution because their flight got cancelled... Isn´t that the same folks that go crazy if their Captain has a cough, or that want to get out after an aborted taxiing to TO or because of a "muslim looking" person for "being afraid"?

Where have we come to? Really?

Sincere condolences to all Norwegians! I guess you will need some aquevit to get over this.

Who cares for a blue moon? I'll settle for a blue nose.
No airtraffic in Norway today and probably not tomorrow either, sucks in a country 2000 km long and with rotten roads and rails. They say that 25% of all air moves in Europe are down. This'll be interesting.

There's something about you and virgins that makes me feel a little bit uneasy.

Update:

Most UK airspace closed until 0100 tomorrow morning. :geek:

Occasional flights may leave from GLA EDI and our other friendly Scottish airports.

The eruption continues apace in Iceland. "Matthew Roberts" from the Icelandic Met Office - a very Icelandic name :-) reports that the volcanic plume is between 3-5km in height and is "ash-poor" - mostly steam. The volcano is melting the ice on its cap rather than spewing out too much ash, glass etc. Last eruption of this volcano was 1821 when it lasted for approximately 2 years.

Fascinating and beautiful
Disruptive and annoying!
