Tens of thousands of airline passengers face travel chaos today after volcanic ash from an eruption in Iceland has forced three airports to shut and brought heavy disruption to others.

Airports in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow were shut this morning and five easyJet flights that were due to take off from Stansted were ground due to massive visibility problems.

At Gatwick, 106 flights were cancelled with heavy disruptions expected to follow later today. All flights from Manchester airport have been disrupted.

Newcastle and Belfast are also affected, according to reports, as is Birmingham airport.

If this eruption continues for extended periods it occurs to me that it might significantly impact travel on a long term basis across this region of the atlantic! Hmmhm!

Seriously, here in Spain on the news they only quote (and show) really super angry self loading freight at the brink of starting a revolution because their flight got cancelled... Isn´t that the same folks that go crazy if their Captain has a cough, or that want to get out after an aborted taxiing to TO or because of a "muslim looking" person for "being afraid"?

Occasional flights may leave from GLA EDI and our other friendly Scottish airports.

The eruption continues apace in Iceland. "Matthew Roberts" from the Icelandic Met Office - a very Icelandic name reports that the volcanic plume is between 3-5km in height and is "ash-poor" - mostly steam. The volcano is melting the ice on its cap rather than spewing out too much ash, glass etc. Last eruption of this volcano was 1821 when it lasted for approximately 2 years.
