Incident: American B738 at Montreal on Nov 30th 2010, runway excursion

By Simon Hradecky, created Wednesday, Dec 1st 2010 09:37Z, last updated Wednesday, Dec 1st 2010 10:31Z

An American Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration N901AN performing flight AA-802 from Dallas Ft. Worth,TX (USA) to Montreal,QC (Canada) with 105 passengers and 6 crew, missed the turn off onto taxiway E after landing on Montreal's runway 24R at 19:52L (00:52Z) and came to a stop with the nose gear off the paved surface. The passengers disembarked onto the runway via mobile stairs, no injuries occurred.

The airport said, the airplane had just landed on runway 24R when the airplane slid off the runway at low speed.

The airline said there are no reports of significant damage to the aircraft.

The Canadian Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
The weather was light rain, so maybe a little slippery:

Not sure why they felt the need to take the first highspeed on a possibly slick runway when twy B2 is up ahead. Our FOQA/ASAP data has been showing a lot of unstable approachs recently mostly caused by folks getting cleared for visual approachs who then try to join final right at or inside the marker. I don't understand what the rush is....why be a hero, give yourself a nice long final. Same with this, why grab the first highspeed unlless you have someone bearing down on you on short fianl.

Good point, especially since B2 is more convenient for apron entry.

On a related note, we recently instituted FOQA at our airline also. I understand your MEC Central Safety Committee insisted on it (and ours certainly didn't oppose it). It also looks like we'll finally be getting ACARS next year. Drats, no more making up oooi times.

Yeah Marty - get your red pen out and give your self a 10 minute ban! I would suggest longer, but with the weather here at the moment, cant afford to waste candles on the vigil.

What was the topic?

I do, I think you should look at Cindy's location.
