It's no different than an APU cocoon, which many aircraft have for fire containment.
LOL100% incorrect Ever hear of Ferry Permit? issued for Non airworthy aircraftno such thing as "barely airworthy" it's either Airworthy or Notyou still have to find a crew willing to fly this "barely airworthy" heap

Show me a battery that never fails. In this case there have been three separate cell events seen in service. Two of those were prior to the design improvements.Agreed, but here the component is NOT designed to be reliable, they designed an enclosure to safeguard the aircraft for when the battery fails. They have not fixed the design deficiency of the component. In all cases it is accepted that some small percentage of parts will fail before their replacement interval (which may be the airplane life). Anybody telling you their part will never ever fail is probably trying to sell you something. So you design the parts to be reliable, you design your scheduled maintenance program to replace parts before they are expected to fail (based both on testing and analysis of that part, and historical experience with similar parts), and you design the airplane to be ok even if some parts do fail. When parts show themselves to be less than the intended reliability then you go fix the design deficiency or the manufacturing issue that is causing the failures.
As you write: " you design your scheduled maintenance program to replace parts before they are expected to fail". They haven't, because they don't have a clue.

In this instance it sounds like the battery enclosure did its job, and presumably the design feature changes made to the battery did their job as well, evidenced by the fact that a single cell vented without turning into a thermal runaway (cell to cell to cell) that occurred 12 months ago.
How is this a threat to the safety of the airplane???

Batteries fail, but lithium batteries fail catastrophically. How is a fire you can't put out a threat to the safety of the airplane? You tell me.

Where did it fail catastrophically, and what fire?

And your lack of basic knowledge of Lithium batteries and how they fail is astonishing. Now that reminds me a lot of.................................... the republicans and climate change.Where did it fail catastrophically, and what fire?

Why else would Boeing ensconce these batteries? For the fun, the added drama, one-upmanship on Airbus? You tell me.
And don't give me Glenn's APU explanation, if that was the case (pun intended) the box and exhaust would have been there from day one. Boeing was caught with their trousers down, dick in hand.

Hard to argue with a word like "ensconce", especially when used incorrectly. Why else would Boeing ensconce these batteries? For the fun, the added drama, one-upmanship on Airbus? You tell me.

Climate change is a funny thing.Your stubbornness and refusal to accept the truth in favor of your own misguided perceptions reminds me a lot of the republicans and climate change.
I was taught in elementary school, that glaciers extended way down into North America after the Ice Age. It is obvious that Earth has been experiencing Global Warming since then. Does Human activity contribute to it? If at all, it's a hell of a lot less than the Dumbocraps exaggerate in order to waste more money on research.

[quoteIf at all, it's a hell of a lot less than the Dumbocraps exaggerate in order to waste more money on research.[/quote]
Well, no.
There was an abnormal acceleration of the increase in temperature in the last century, which caused an abnormal acceleration of the rate at which the Artic and Antartic ice melts, and which is closely correlated with an abnormal increase in the CO2 concentration, which in turn is closely correlated to the increase in human emmisions, all coincident (just by chance?) with the increase of human activity involving burn of fossil fuels.
Where I'm living now, 30 years ago it used to be all frozen from April to October. Now it doesn't even snow anymore. The average winter temperature has risen maybe 10 degrees in that time, from -10°C to 0°C. And there is no volcanic activity or something nearby. Hard to blame a natural process for this change. The usual temp vs time charts (as the one shown above) refer to the World's average, but the change is happening much faster in the Arctic and Antarctic zones.

Got a graph of solar activity?
Would also like to see some analysis of how many weather stations are at airports and the change in % pavement at those airports in the last 75 years.

The human contribution to global warming is generally due to two major contributors:
Lithium batteries going kaboom
Certain pilots overheated brains
Eliminate these and the new ice age will be just around the corner.

Got a graph of solar activity?
World's temperature was correlated to solar activity when the CO2 was low and level.
Another factor linked to the Sun's radiance is the Earth's absorbency. Ice and snow reflect solar radiation back to the Universe. There is less and less snow-and-ice covered area, and hence less and less energy reflected, and hence more and more energy absorbed by the Earth, which is then harder to radiate back to the universe due to the greenhouse shield of CO2, wich is at its highest level in at least the last 15 millions of years (as a comparison, we homo sapiens have 200,000 years here and the first hominid appeared 4 million years ago), and raising faster than ever as far as we know.
