That doesn't strike me as a significant contributing factor...Wichita is not too many miles high, nor was the weather hot.
...then again, speaking in hindsight, from an arm chair at 0 kts with no engine malfunctions, I guess it might have been better to raise the gear and conduct a slow, straight ahead climb, get a little altitude and then turn around and go back to land.
