It sounded too good to be true
Somewhat surprisingly the majority of the passengers appear to have survived
Now reporting 23 dead, 15 survivors, 20 missing

Parlour talk: It doesn't look like it's out of control from asymmetrical thrust.
Also of note: The weather seems unremarkable.

Now that it's at the 24-hour point, it's time for an ITS-analysis.
Cheap composites probably have a limited role in the major structural components. The cabin survived fairly well as did some of the passengers.
Fly-By-Wire systems that mask classic aerodynamic behavior are not involved.
The aircraft was not equipped with a Ballistic Recovery Parachute.
However, the aircraft is designed and made by Frenchmen.

...so it appears to be the classic one engine quits, and in the hurry to feather and secure, you shut down the good engine.
I guess we need more guarded switches.

Re: ATR-72 down in Taiwan
From Wikipedia:
On 6 February, investigators revealed that there had been no engine flameout; rather, the right engine, for which the warning had sounded, had switched to idle mode. Subsequently, the pilots cut power to the left engine.
Cockpit voice recorder
The following data is selective CVR data released by the investigating authorities on 6 February (all times local):
10:51:13 — Received take-off clearance
10:52:34 — Tower asked pilots to contact Taipei Departure
10:52:38 — Warning sound recorded
10:52:43 — Crew cut power to left engine
10:53:00 — Crew discuss checklist of turning off an engine in flight
10:53:06 — Crew discuss cutting power to engine number 1 (left engine) and confirm engine number 2 (right engine) is idle
10:53:13 to 10:53:19 — First stall warning
10:53:20 — Crew said engine number 1 is feathering and has power cut
10:53:21 — Second stall warning
10:53:35 — Crew issues "Mayday" call with a message of "Engine Flameout"
10:54:09 — Crew calls for restarting engine multiple times
10:54:34 — Second master warning
10:54:34 — CVR records unknown sound
10:54:37 — Stops recording
The authority made a preliminary determination that it was engine number 2 that went to idle/feather by itself and caused the first warning sound at 10:52:38.3; the crew cut power to engine number 1 at 10:52:43.0.

Re: ATR-72 down in Taiwan
That's ... interesting; they confirmed that #2 is idle and are talking about shutting down #1 and it didn't occur to either of them that this is a problem? O_o
Apparently standards haven't been what one might like though:

The Guardian rather dryly noted his fate

Re: ATR-72 down in Taiwan
Something to be said for the old fundamental:
1. Warning
2. Don't touch anything
3. Light cigarette
4. Do exactly as commanded by the captain...do not ask questions
?
