Oh, the humanity.
Commercial jet skids off runway at airport in Nepal

Kathmandu, Nepal (CNN)A Turkish Airlines jet carrying 224 people skidded off a runway Wednesday morning at Kathmandu's airport, forcing those on board to evacuate and effectively shutting down Nepal's lone international airport, authorities said.

The Airbus A330's crew first tried landing the plane around 7 a.m. Wednesday (8:30 p.m. ET Tuesday), getting very close to a runway but not touching down, according to passenger Deepak Malhotra. That was followed by an announcement that the aircraft couldn't land due to poor visibility.

About 45 minutes later, though, the crew tried again.

This time, the Turkish Airlines plane did get on the ground but it didn't stay on the runway, according to airport officials. The aircraft skidded off, screeching to a stop with its nose pitched down.

Indeed.

It would appear that there might be some end of flight structural break up involving cheap composites, and an over run involving the game-like, airmanship-negating, fly-by-wire logic.

Watching the video it seems rather risky to have used the rear slides with the tail so high due to the nose gear failure. Any SOPs for various scenarios? Or is just up to the cabin crew's initiative/judgement?

"...Nepal's lone international airport,"

Why didn't they just divert to Yakland AFB?

Amusing (but very predictable) youtube comments. Will look forward to the report on this one, given that it would appear to have been entirely avoidable.

... I think we could have predicted the ...

Four seconds before the “MINIMUMS” auto-callout, the PM stated “it will appear when we descend below…”

When the “MINIMUM” auto-call out was annunciated at 01:58:30 hrs the PF responded “continue until 300 ft”

... but the incorrect co-ordinates in the database leading to the automatics effectively aligning the aircraft with the runway edge rather than the centreline taught them a lesson.
