Wow... where to start with this one?

How about here:
The engine lights immediately went on and the pilot was forced to land the plane unexpectedly at Nashville International Airport, WTVF reported.
Engine lights? There's a "cover flew off the engine" light? And while the landing in Nashville may have been unexpected for the pax, I bet the pilots expected it.

And then... a flight from Atlanta to Chicago diverts to Nashville after encountering turbulence over Cleveland? That would make much more sense if the article had included the fact that the turbulence was not over Cleveland Ohio but Cleveland Tennessee.

Wow, you read the article.

I just read the headline and looked at the pictures of the naked engine plumbing (per my typical M.O.)

I know.

To be technical, it's a DC-9.

Well, all the MD-80/90/95 / B-717 are under the DC-9 type certificate that was amended over and over to include the new "variants".

No, but an uncontained engine failure can certainly trigger some lights.

On May 9th 2016 the FAA reported the aircraft suffered an uncontained failure of the right hand engine

Indeed! Although there appears to be significant confusion among the inhabitants of the intarwebs about whether the loss of the cowling was a *result* of the uncontained failure, or whether it *was* the uncontained failure.

Yeah but you know in reality it's just an oversized Caravelle with different windows. Heck, it even has a Rolls-Royce engine... sort of!

So, for the next beat-a-dead-horse question:

Was severe turbulence the TRUE, PRIMARY CAUSE of the cowling to fall off...

...OR...

...was there probably something significantly wrong with the cowling attachments to start with?

It's too bad our friend from the other forum isn't here to explain to us why the *real* cause of this is the fact the aircraft was an outdated, non-FBW, and therefore UNSAFE model. 8-)

Not too long ago, flyAirbusboy made a somewhat heartless post about the 'true DC-9' 15-50s needing to be put out to pasture.

Check engine, you have lost a major portion of your flywheel* which may result in severe, damaging vibrations?

*or is that the cooling fan?

Well, I'm here in Nashville and the 717 is sitting here on the ramp undergoing an engine change, so I'm guessing that there's more going on than 'turbulence' causing the cowl to fly off.

PS, 3WE, if you see Maddog headed into flyover airport inthe next couple hours, wave hi

Quick update, now that I've been outside on the walkaround, apparently both engines are being replaced
