So apparently Boeing is moving to 3D printing of some/many titanium parts (instead of machining) to reduce waste. How much experience does the world really have with this process and its failure modes? It seems kind of premature to me, at least when compared to composites.
I had a link somewhere but I can't find it now...

Re: Printed titanium crackerboxes
soon we will be able to 3D print anything in our homes and factories will be a thing of the past, apart from 3D printer factories I suppose.

3D titanium printer... Print heads must run hot like hell - too lazy to google for titanium melting point but you get the idea.
However, I will google "3D titanium printer" in a minute and, why not, "titanium melting point" too...

Well well, interesting technology: http://3d-printing-titanium.com/
Oh, by the way, more than 1,650 °C or 3,000 °F for titanium...

I think there are also some "3D metal printing" processes out there where the item is not printed directly. Instead it's printed with a low-melting-point material like wax, that material is used to make a mold, then molten metal is poured into the mold to make the final product.

If regular ink cartridges are so ridiculously expensive, I don't want to know the price of titanium cartridges .
