Current and future wrong runway alignment thread.

Postby 3WE » Fri Dec 15, 2017 4:25 pm

According to www.internet.com headlines, A Delta person had trouble with keeping the 14 strips of somewhat parallel concrete straight during the week of 12/11/2017.

The article was a good one- seemed to be trying to embellish it to a "near total disaster"

"The plane, crossed the taxiway threshold at 60 ft AGL, and then went around."

"The taxiway WAS occupied with a plane full of passengers"

However, "The taxiing plane was NOT_overflown by the landing plane." (Wow, so the pilot went around AND sidestepped to get back over the runway.)

Should we really sit back and let this happen? Should we write a letter to the FAA to hire Evan as a safety consultant for ATL?

The FO was the flying pilot and he was in initial line training. They were making an ILS approach in solid low-IMC. They were right of the locallizer and the FO corrected to the left (and apparently over-corrected, thus aiming to the taxiway on the left of the RWY). Upon reaching minimums (I believe about 100ft) and with the RWY NOT ins sight, they initiated the go-around. At about the same time the tower instructed them to go around.

Bottom line, I would not call this a current or future wrong runway alignment thread, not at least in the "classic" sense of the pilot thinking he was aligned with the correct RWY when in fact he was approaching the wrong RWY, a TWY, or the wrong airport altogether.

Interesting. Taxiway-magnitude deviations seem a bit much.
