Engine surge OMG WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE

Again... https://www.cnn.com/2018/02/27/us/south ... index.html

I have to give ABC news minor props in this case, at least they're not calling it an "engine fire": http://abcnews.go.com/US/southwest-flig ... d=53370803

Wrong.
WATCH Engine fire forces Southwest flight to return to airport

I am just amazed that in all of the flights I have taken I've never been in a surge condition!

Rode a 727 from Flyover to Boston in the early 1990's.

During some good reverse thrust, there was a significant bang.

I ass ume, the #2 engine stalled...

I miss the 20th Century.

Flight Report Bragging Hijack

Postby 3WE » Wed Feb 28, 2018 2:03 pm

Rode a 727
Oh quit bragging.
Hey dude, it was only THE most popular airplane for domestic travel for 20-some years until that other outdated, less sexy 737 took over...

..twas actually not that big of a deal.

Stuff I'm more proud of:

707 to Dayton and back.
747 from MSP to LAX and back and from Flyover to hooowaii.
BAC-111 from Flyover to PIT
Shorts 330
Twin Oetter
Ozark DC-9 from Flyover to LAS via DSM and KCI
Southwest airlines from two states away to DAL...via Lubbock. Book tickets separately, get suitcase from carousel, recheck for next flight.

Stuff that I'm not proud of, but nevertheless have historic significance:

L-1011
DC-10/MD-11...something

Planes I did NOT get to fly on, and regret

F-227
DC-3
DC-8
DC-7

Late sixties or very early seventies, LGW to ACI (and back) on one of these... 8-)

I'm so jealous... :x
Some 50 years ago, part of my Not_aeroplanie enthusiast family rode an Aerolíneas Argentinas Comet 4... while Not_Dad, the aeroplanie lover, was away. He could never get over that and is still outraged at their lack of understanding of the importance of flying in such an historic aeroplanie  .
I am just amazed that in all of the flights I have taken I've never been in a surge condition!
We should clone you and put "you" in every flight!

Stuff I'm more proud of:
(snip)
Oh stop it!

I've flown on a bunch of different types, most of which weren't very memorable. A few that were:
727 - comfy cozy and quiet (on the inside)
DeHavilland Dash 7 - 4500 horsepowers with a small wing and fuselage attached
Cessna 404 - definitely the most "intimate" plane I've flown on in airline service

Ones I haven't flown on and regret:
Any 1st-generation jet like 707, DC-8, Caravelle, Trident
Concorde
747
The last-gen large piston airliners: DC-6/DC-7, Connie

One in that last category I've never been attracted to is the Boeing 377. I think that one falls into the helicopter category where it doesn't actually generate lift, it's just so ugly the Earth repels it.

Then there was the 172-M. 160 HP, 40 degrees of flaps and an ASI that gave you MPH instead of Kts...

Yes, there was a certain type specific aspect to the airspeeds...

Yeah, yeah, blah, blah....you've done all the usual suspects.
What about the T-154, I-86, Yak 40 something, Chinese built, Russian designed thing with glass nose, the DC9-Sport and no one mentions the BAe 146? What's up with that.
The ones i've missed, except piston driven stuff is, the Caravelle, and I still haven't done the A380 and A350. Emirates pushed us on some old and boring Triple Sevens yesterday. Thirty Eight, (38),, three eight, loooooong and boring hours Hotel----------->Home.

Engine surge, stalling? That's what the not so smart, Swedish head driver told us when one B-767's engine said a load goodbye and we returned to Beijing. "Eh, Miss, may I have another Scotch please, yes, on the Rocks if you would be so kind".

Per, several years ago you swore you were unlikely to be found flying on a 787, do you still hold that view?
I love the caravelle, but the bird I really wanted to fly again (David Hilditch helped me to find one ten or so years ago)... the Tristar! What a BEAST!

I haven't flown the Screamliner since.
The Caravelle, all I remember is the noise.
The Tristar? In ten abreast config, a chinese Chinese on each side and me tired to death after weeks in China and no available Business Class available, can't say I much liked the trip. Remember the beast as an airy cabin. Cathay from somewhere China to Kai Tak.

The tri star was a wide body, but it seemed comfortable and SEEMED agile... the takeoff roll seemed as short as any DC-9 or 727.

Also, as an adolescent, it was frustrating that it was so quiet at takeoff compared to 727s and DC-9s...that big plane should have been louder.

The RR sound was distinctive- and TWA drove several over the childhood home.
