Dash 8 down in Kathmandu

Postby KPryor » Mon Mar 12, 2018 12:16 pm

Witnesses report the plane looked "wobbly" on approach. 71 on board with at least 40 dead.

Saw another quote that the plane was supposed to land from the south, but instead chose to land from the opposite direction.

Gabriel is confused about some back and forth 'debate' between the plane and the tower regarding which runway to land on.

I speculate something was wrong with the aircraft before touchdown and the landing was somewhat poorly controlled. :(

Yes, that and more:

Airplane is on final approach to Kathmandu's runway 02, cleared to land [Ok, so it's flying roughly North?]
Then the aircraft turns left [Turn left like in small adjustment or like in make a left?]
Tower: Do not turn towards runway 20, turn right [Uh? how can a left turn when in final approach to 02 will be an indication of going for 20?]
Tower: Cleared to land runway 02
Plane: Request to land on runway 20
Tower: Ok, cleared to land runway 20
Tower: Do you have runway 20 in sight? [Ok, so where on Earth is the plane heading at this point???]
Plane: Negative
Tower: Do you have runway 02 in sight?
Plane: Affirmetive
Tower: Cleared the flight again to land on runway 02
Then the plane buzzes the tower which is west of the runway
And crashes in a football/soccer field east of the runway.

What the heck???????

I speculate that the system that was malfunctioning in the aircraft was the twin carbon-based multi-sensor multi-output-devices NI (as opposed to the AI version) flight management computers, and that poorly controlled landing is an understatement and they were not remotely aligned with the runway and the touchdown point was not remotely near either end of the runway.

But that's just speculation.

I do somewhat concur and understand.

However, I find reporting inaccuracies and/or a severe on-board problem and/or desperation to be fairly plausible and consistent.

Ok, Gabriel put a recording of ATC tapes there.

It is indeed strange. No real evidence of an on board problem, BUT fairly routine, female voiced operations seem to quickly change to crazy operations with a markedly dopey-but-calm male voice.

One exchange is interesting: Tower, Bangalore 811...female Bangalor 811...pause...male Bangalore 811...The gals voice is a bit off.

I speculate some sort of terrorist or Germanwings deal...

Everyone has differing opinions. I try to avoid a pure copy paste...most of the time, anyway.

By the way, the female male swap-over appears absolute. We never hear from her again.

You never hear from the first guy in the tower or from the lady in the tower again after the third guy in the tower takes over. Doesn't that call your attention too? Maybe it was a coordinated operation between the guy in the cockpit and the 3rd guy in the tower?

Wow man...are you really losing it? A totally professional gal dead on approach changes to a goofy dude flying all over the place...THAT is strange.

A totally professional gal in the tower sees a plane flying goofy and then a guy takes over and continues to handle the strangeness professionally...that's kind of normal SOP...maybe the senior controller takes over...seen it in other cases besides this and the sex is in material. The sudden change in the plane from clear professional behavior to seemingly impaired behavior might mean something.

You have gone totally black and white and unable to discern wild speculation like meteors and men colluding vs women versus speculation within reasonably known facts.

How on Earth do you know who was flying when? Didn't it occur to you that maybe Goofy may have been flying in the beginning and the gal was the pilot monitoring and operating the radios?
You have gone totally black and white and unable to discern wild speculation like meteors and men colluding vs women versus speculation within reasonably known facts.
Pst!... the meteor thing... I didn't mean it.

What I meant is that at this point the accident can be a number of things. Obviously there was some pilot confusion (and tower confusion to a lesser extent too). How much that played a role in the accident is something that the investigators probably already have a good clue (since thy already listened to the CVR recordings and went through the FDR parameters too) but we don't.

It seems that they were in and out of IMC, maybe they got specially disoriented.
Maybe the pilot flying was a stoned goofy indeed.
Maybe they had a technical issue as you first said.
Maybe they stalled.
Maybe it was a meteor (not really, but I hope you get my point).

I concede that what you say is a possible scenario, I even concede that it might be more likely than others... but not by much. Still too many unknowns.

[Moderate-length Gabrellian comments] I concede that what you say is a possible scenario, I even concede that it might be more likely than others... but not by much. Still too many unknowns to say for certain.
1. Fixed.

2. With the add-on, I have no argument...and my comment about professional gal totally deferring to goofy guy is not to declare that as a very likely cause* but more to ask WHEN in the hell might we hear the CVR to see what happened to Flygirl? and what discussion was happening as someone SEEMED to fly all over creation and disturb the control tower guys and gals both.

*I do declare it as something interesting and unusual and a place where we should dig further (as opposed to a search for meteorite sightings).

According to there, the final report is out and it was extreme fatigue, a grossly botched landing (with plenty of botched other stuff enroute) and crappy CRM.

Seemingly unbelievable, but...

Just from what we already knew, this whole thing seemed to be many failures combined. I'll be interested to hear what the final report says.

By the way, I am on record speculating that something broke or something bad happened on the plane.

Tough to swallow that it was botched piloting- turn it over to Evan’s computers, I guess.

What an incredible mess that entire approach was. The captain may have been there physically, but mentally he was way gone long before the crash.

And the FO the same, although in a very different way and for very different reasons.
