Tourist hell i chopper crashes.

Grand Canyon last month. Another in New Yark this month (and of course, we have the spectacular mid air from a couple years back). :(

Sad to go on vacation and crash burn/drown and die.

Sure, let's add more regulation an oversight.

And to make the obligatory heartless comment: I'm sure the insurance rates are pretty steep and that might be some pressure to run a tight ship...or not.

Sad to go to work offshore and crash burn/drown and die.
Fixed.
Your aged co-forumite is due to travel to HDY towards the end of this month,
(yes, I know, it was meant to be February while Per was in Bali, but stuff happens)
and take one of the above to go to a Malaysian rig drilling in the gulf of Thailand.

If I crashed/burned/drowned/died I will make sure to posted a full report....

If you think you will have a mental problem of reviewing the many ways the scientifically-engineered, robust, backup-laden flying machine might go awry, I have found that adult beverages can be effective.

Also, try to keep your personal effects (and/or appendages) from getting hung up in the controls.

Good luck.

I see what you did there.

I have found that adult beverages can be effective.
Sadly (but wisely, I think) adult beverages are available neither at the well site nor on the aforementioned Flying Machines.
I shall therefore endeavour to over-imbibe before embarkation, whilst remaining alert to potential chopper problems..... 8-)

Local media reported yesterday (before the bag theory) that "one of the engines" had apparently failed. Of course, my first reaction was "that can't be the cause, the civilian Eurotrashcopter AS350 surely has a lot more engines". After checking Wikipedia, the wise words of Evanie came to my mind. BAN ALL CIVILIAN SINGLE ENGINED HELL-ICOPTERS! (and passengers carrying bags).

How many engines would have failed in a 4-engine chopper after the pax closed the fuel shutoff valve with the strap of his camcorder?

Maybe I should have worded my post better: my (fake) evaniesque thoughts were when the incident was still apparently due to engine failure (and before going there and seeing that Evanie is still opposed to single engined civilian airbeaters). That said, a 4-engine heicopter should obviously have four separate fuel cutoff switches  .

Argies and NY not getting along lately. 5 dead in the terrorist van attack a couple of months ago. Now a young lady died in this crash.

NY and everyone else generally do not get along. In other news, Argentinians seem to fall victims to newsworthy disasters there including a van attack and a young lady died in this crash.

Fixed.

My boarding experience there last year was most educational.

Maybe we should have a destination black list...

Not only tourist choppers, but now the police are trying to win the avoidable accident of the year award.

Cue the Flyboy phrase: THAT is going to be paperwork.

We will have to consult the final report- was the parked chopper not properly positioned?

It seems this happened in 2012 and the report is here.

Well, there is currently a THREE-engine helicopter in operation. A four-engine one was developed, flown, but not produced.

Nice! :D

Nooo  . Both Evanie and I are deeply disappointed :( .

Just back in Songkhla (Thailand) after a week offshore in the disputed MTJDA ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysia% ... pment_area )
Survived the trip there and back in one of these https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/db ... cType=A139
It seemed to have plenty of noisy engines and even some spare rotor blades (total 5!).

ROJ: spare rotor blades (total 5!).
At the risk of stating obvious things we all know: one might roughly estimate more than 2X odds of a rotor blade flying off versus 2-bladed helicopters...Glad you surviveded.

Indeed,
Risk analysis is always a case of probability x severity.............
.............and I suspect that losing one out of two, or one out of five results in a disaster of the same severity.
But then again, maybe you can still auto-rotate with 4 out of 5 but it's certainly going to shake a lot.

Indeed. Now loosing the right 2 ones exactly at the same time and having them share off in a benign way can be survivable in a 6-blade config.
But then again, maybe you can still auto-rotate with 4 out of 5 but it's certainly going to shake a lot.
No, you can't. Shake a lot is the understatement of the week.
At the RPM needed for the rotor to be effective and avoid blade stall, and with the wight of each of these blades, the helicopter will simply self-disassemble at once, and you know about synergy, all the parts that make up the helicopter is NOT the helicopter. You cannot autorotate a bunch of loose parts falling from the sky.

I also noted the word "maybe" in your original statement and accepted it with the normal dry humour that we are also mildly famous for.

Should all helicopteries have ejectable rotors and ballistic parachutes? Should I make crude drawings of this and present them there as a revolutionary idea to make Not_fixed-wing-aviation safer? (I'm missing that kind of posts...)

Yes, you should. The question is... will you?
