Southwest engine went boom
Seems a Southwest Fokker CRJ-2747 had a little engine boo-boo just now: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/southwest- ... m-updates/

Re: Southwest engine went boom
Indeed- I have seen the jetphotos. Unfortunately they have several photographic issues.
"Passenger partially sucked out of window" and other injuries.
Her hair-do probably did died.
I thought scientific engineers designed engines to not spew parts into aircraft.
Will the normal debate about what constitutes a contained engine failure break out?
Curious if she was wearing her seatbelt per good procedure?
What model of CRJ-2747...the -300, the -700 or the max with the sinks that have hydraulic flow reversals?
Can't wait for the CVR to know if they mechanically recited memory checklists and consulted the correct QRH procedures.
Also curious to know if any significant yoke pull ups occurred.
And I am not 100% sure- is WN on Evan's no-fly list or just almost on Evan's no-fly list? Or is it on there now?
No doubt this is due to shoddy, cost cutting, cowboy maintenance procedures.

Is "exploded engine" one of the standard reasons for photo rejection there?

Re: Southwest engine went boom
In one picture, they cropped off the very tip of the winglet...Also the odds of dust spots and sharpness and over/under exposure and lighting and category...way too high...and what if that aircraft registration is already in the database? Is "exploded engine" one of the standard reasons for photo rejection there?

This kind of engines explode when you shut off the wrong engine, Or don't they?

CNN:
And... wait for it... pax are describing this 3,400 FPM descent as a "free fall".Flight information provided by FlightRadar24 showed the plane went from approximately 30,000 feet to 13,000 feet in five minutes.

Crap...initial reports cited no serous injuries.Sucked pax did died.

Is this the first ever passenger death on Southwest?
For years they claimed no deaths, but then one of their over runs killed some folks in a car on a road next to the airport.

A news article: "There was blood everywhere"
Gratuitous speculation 1: Gal partially sucked out- BUT someone ahead or behind her got nailed by a blade.Jetphoto at Jetphotos: [***a busted window with no blood***].
Gratuitous speculation 2: A meteor may have hit the front of the engine damaging the containment and turbine blades.

I wonder whether the passenger was wearing their "seatbelt while seated at all times"."Passenger partially sucked out of window" and other injuries.

Re: Southwest engine went boom
I wonder how much difference it would make? I'm not being sarcastic, I really do wonder.
Unbelted your body gets pulled toward the window, your head probably goes outside the plane, and you get to experience a X00 MPH slipstream, low atmospheric pressure, and below-zero temps. Plus air trying to exit the plane all around you.
Belted you'd probably(?) stay inside the plane, but your head will likely be in the way of any objects trying to exit the aircraft.
Neither would be much fun.

Re: Southwest engine went boom
Presumably this is not the case on WN (their flights are still general admission, right?) but there would be some massive irony here if the passenger in question had paid extra for a window seat.

Sorry 3WE, I missed this before posting the same thing

It seems it was not a CRJ but a B737-700 and the engine was a CFM-56

Re: Southwest engine went boom
They should give discounts to sit in that whole row (or two)........ if the passenger in question had paid extra for a window seat.
I already have "aisle" as a preference with the travel agents, now I need row exclusions too.

Re: Southwest engine went boom
Somehow, I wanted to believe that you can be partially sucked out of a plane and not seriously injured- and initial news reports were not saying much about serious injuries and the inside area by the window looks rather tidy.Gratuitous speculation 1: Gal partially sucked out- BUT someone ahead or behind her got nailed by a blade.
Sadly, I was wrong. New quotes in the news suggest basic trauma from getting forcefully and rapidly shoved out a window.
Yes, I switched from suck to shove...fizicysts would tell you that there is no such thing as suction...only shoving from the pressure inside the plane.

Re: Southwest engine went boom
As a side comment, she was wearing a seatbelt (there were some comments in different fora in the line of "that happens for not using the seatbelt at all times as recommended")

Very sad for the lady concerned. Lots of blood down the side of the plane - good spot Per.Somehow, I wanted to believe that you can be partially sucked out of a plane and not seriously injured- and initial news reports were not saying much about serious injuries and the inside area by the window looks rather tidy.Gratuitous speculation 1: Gal partially sucked out- BUT someone ahead or behind her got nailed by a blade.

Blunt force trauma, being hit by whatever broke the window, by the passage through the window and even possibly made worse by being struck by any other sort of debris when her head was outside of the plane (?)

Re: Southwest engine went boom
Never mind the force on your body due to the pressure difference inside vs. outside the plane, once you're stuck in the opening.
9 PSI times... what's the surface area of an airliner window? Say the window is 10" x 12", that's 120 square inches times 9 PSI, that's 1080 lbs. of force.
