Seattle Q-400

Postby 3WE » Sat Aug 11, 2018 8:58 am

Just ass uming the general public will want and regulators will have some more procedures.

Will also be interesting to see if the dude was an actual Q-400 pilot or how he knew to start the thing.

Also, from my limited understanding- could he easily get ATC clearance? ATC would expect a flight plan from an airliner, I’d think and could any old joe call in a flight plan for an airliner. I ass ume he may have politely taxied and taken off with no clearances.

He appears to have been a maintenance technician from what I have read.
I listenend to the entire ATC radio (that has been captured) and it is very, very sad.
Poor chap. There's also quite a bit of video capturing the rolls he did and flying around the area.

I’m still curious how the ATC stuff unfolded. I guess regardless of when he called them, there’s no way to stop him short of fighter jets. To dangerous and not enough time to block him with a snow plow.

The Guardian report describes him stealing the aircraft after beginning a "start up" procedure and "barging" onto the runway.

The excerpts appear to show that he was sad, a little reflective... exhilarated by what he had achieved, He made some references to going to jail and at one point expressed a fear that a nearby airport had "anti-aircraft" by which I assume he meant anti-aircraft guns. He made reference to having flown planes in "video games". There are the obvious references to GTA in various comment threads I have read.

Thinking forward I wonder what sort of ramifications this might have for the future. New procedures to deal with stolen aircraft?
This individual appears to have been a "responsible" suicider, in that he didn't wish to cause impact to other people.

Maybe the cockpit door is locked when unattended and “we” require two people present when it isn’t.

BUT how do you keep one person from grabbing some keys?
