As I state there, I assume (and hope) there was no serious injury (although it appears the aircraft did died).
Interesting set of circumstances to have a rear-end collision like that.
In the interest of arm-chair / Monday AM QBing...I would think that fundamentals (and procedures) might call for veering off the runway instead of nailing the plane ahead. Then you only break one airplane.

I think common sense would determine you would try to do that - perhaps some form of mechanical or mental failure stopped the chap behind from doing such a thing. Very odd indeed.
