2018, a good year.

In spite of all the things we find wrong in aviation, Flyboy and colleagues have again hauled many buttocks across many miles with a record, or near-record low in accidents and fatalities.

We did have that busted turbine/busted window incident :( and some bent stuff here and there and an over run (that apparently is NOT worthy to be discussed there), but all in all a good job for the greedy, credit-card-selling, seat-pitch-squeezing industry.

I a narrow Unitedstatian view (or even western view), yes. However, globally 2018 was worse than the previous 5 years' average and particularly worse than 2017 where there were 0 fatalities in a Jet commercial flight.

372 person were killed in the 3 totally or almost totally fatal Jet accidents in 2018 (out of the 373 that were in these planes).
An Antonov 148 in Russia, a 737-200 in Cuba (1 survivor), and a 737-Max8 in Indonesia.

Then we had 3 totally fatal turboprop accidents (a LET 410, an Antonov 26, and an AT-72) an one piston (JU-52).
(I am not counting the DH-8 taken by a non pilot on an aerobatic suicidal flight)
(I am also not counting other accidents where most persons walked away unharmed, and we had pretty spectacular ones, like the ditching of a 737 and an Embraer with inverted ailerons).

Yes.

We invented aeroplanies, too.
Then you may want to know that 4 of the fatal accidents involved Boeing airplanes.
In one of them the crew had clearly no way to avoid it, but was caused by the destruction of a very american GE engine (sort of).
In another one, the crew could have definitively done better, but a serious design flay was at play, which will end up curtaining Boeing.

On the other hand, we had exactly ZERO superior-composite-polymers-materials-and-smart-cockpit-automation-and-interface European Airbus fatal accidents.
