Strange and Stormy night at STL
Big line of storms coming in...but, several minutes before they arrived, it seemed most planes were landing on 29 and most departures on 30L. (It would appear 30R is closed. (WTF on landing on 29 and departing from 30L
As the storms approached, the tower was giving lots of wind shear warnings- all for gain. It seemed these were from some detection system and not PIREPs...so much new, interesting crap.
Then two 737's went around claiming they gained a big headwind.
Then a departing Learjet reported severe turbulence between 3 and 4-thousand feet.
Just before the storms arrived, they switched everything to Runway 6...and a 737 is reporting + and - 15 knot variations.
Given that the final for 6 is near my house, I'm going outside to watch big aeroplanies.

Re: Strange and Stormy night at STL
I get outside to watch a 737 go around (I think we live about a mile outside the marker).
Shortly after, another 737 comes along and goes all the way followed by a Weber C-206.
The clouds are nasty gust-fronty going different directions and lots of little spin here and there.
The original Southwest guy that went around as been vectored WAY southwest of everything...
I hear on the tower that everyone is waving off takeoffs in a classic heard-behavior moment (the storm was hitting full fury.)
They try a few landings to the NW- but some of those folks go around.
Now nothing's going on and guys are being vectored all over creation.
The cooler air is nice.

Re: Strange and Stormy night at STL
I'm now hearing the occasional takeoff...
Another interesting deal is that most of the flights are "trapped" South of the line of storms and the storms are just about to pass to the South of the airport.
It will be fun to watch how they work them through the line and then in to land.
The tower is talkative as there's not really any operations...I heard him say, "Depart 30s and land on 29".
Sounds crazy, but maybe it keeps everyone taxiing to the west and fewer conflicts.

Now, as best as I can tell, a few landings are taking place on 24....
They are starting to direct people to the North side of the line of storms through some lighter areas...not sure there's a lot of landings yet.
The tower is issuing takeoff clearances as fast as they can on 30L

A wad of folks holding Southwest of the airport has dispersed....I
There's another wad on the SE arrival and collection of guys on the north side...
Someone just called in on the ILS 29....perhaps it's begun.

The Sotheast Hold is falling apart...they are making a few zig zags towards the north to avoid weather, but then sneaking in kind of close to the marker (I guess).

Re: Strange and Stormy night at STL
The big storms are past and things are a bit calmer...but they are still landing on 29 where you end up WAY away from the guts of the airport...
I am still am amazed at some of the crazy vectoring that goes on with Center mostly....Someone from the Southeast flew 100 miles past the airport along the leading edge of the storms, and now is making a left 270 degree (routhly) turn to cut through a gap. I think the gap was there when he flew past....the dude behind him made a direct right turn into the gap and is now 30 miles ahead of him.
A couple of dudes from Houston Flew about 180 miles Northwest of the field to join the NW arrival....while guys on the SW arrival flew "underneath him/her"
A reminder that this is Flyover International airport that is not that busy...You can clearly see how tight they get airplanes as they line them right after the weather broke....but all these other guys are scattering all over the state with 50 and 100 mile spacings...And there's not that much other traffic about and I don't think the guys are playing in the MOA's either.

Another goofy one...
Just heard, "Wind 180 at 8, cleared for takeoff on 30L....
Sitting in suspense to see if they turn it around.

...and a dude GOING to Houston went 80 miles North...did a 180....while NW departures are going....NW.
Wind now 200...that still favors a 120 landing direction

I always appreciate the razz and yes the aerospace system operates in a boring efficiency in spite of weather, but it’s still a wonder and exciting to watch the proceedings and adjustments as y’all defy did dieding.I got some paint I need to watch dry.

Going to have a little fun with this...flyboy: I got some paint I need to watch dry.
Have any of the two or three persons that frequent this forum, ever pulled up flightaware on a stormy night and watch things unfold?
It's kind of fascinating... [Can I have an Amen?]
Not expecting everyone to start posting a play by play, but when you have a good rip-roaring thunderstorm going through town during a slightly busy air-traffic time, it's fun to watch. The storm itself is also a source of great entertainment.
A lot funner than watching ground stops or paint drying.
And don't pretend you don't enjoy your job Flyboy.

Re: Strange and Stormy night at STL
I rather enjoyed the play by play. I live about 3 1/2 hours east of you in Illinois and we got pretty lucky with the storms. All the bad stuff split and went around us to the north and south.
I enjoy listening to bad weather ops on aviation frequencies. I don't have a large airport nearby, so I don't have the added benefit of being able to go outside and see them up close and personal. I operate a Pi-Aware install that feeds data to flightaware.com and it provides me with a real time map showing all the ads-b enabled flights around my area, so I can at least follow along a little.
