WWII Commemorative Flyover To Be Held In 2020

Postby J » Fri Jan 11, 2019 7:37 pm

Around 100 vintage warbirds in 24 historically sequenced formations are expected to participate in next year’s second Arsenal of Democracy Flyover, the event planning committee announced this week. The flyover, which is being held to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe and the Pacific, will coincide with a ceremony for veterans at the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., on Friday, May 8, 2020. The first Arsenal of Democracy Flyover took place in 2015 and featured more than 70 aircraft in 15 formations.

“Just as in 2015, this flyover will be conducted for the sole purpose of honoring those who fought in the epic struggle and the men and women on the home front who created The Arsenal of Democracy,” said GAMA President and Arsenal of Democracy executive planning committee member Pete Bunce. “We hope that by recognizing their sacrifices and achievements, all Americans, especially our younger generations, can reflect and be inspired by what can be achieved when a nation unites for a common and just purpose.”

Organizations such as the Commemorative Air Force, Dakota Territory Air Museum, Fighter Factory, Friends of DOC and Fagen Fighters will be bringing aircraft to the event. Aircraft expected to participate include the P-40 Warhawk, P-39 Airacobra, P-38 Lightning, P-51 Mustang, P-47 Thunderbolt, F4U Corsair, B-25 Mitchell, B-17 Flying Fortress, Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane. The Arsenal of Democracy executive planning committee members come from the General Aviation Manufacturers Association, Commemorative Air Force, International Council of Air Shows, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and National Air Traffic Controllers Association.
