Flyglobespan into Administration:

Scotland's biggest airline, FlyGlobespan, has been placed in administration after attempts to find a new investor fell through.

All scheduled flights will cease from Wednesday evening.

Administrators PricewaterhouseCoopers said FlyGlobespan was in contact with about 5,000 passengers booked to travel with the airline.

Mesa Air Files for Chapter 11 Protection
The Wall Street Journal 01/06/2010
Author: Ann Keeton
(Copyright (c) 2009, Dow Jones & Company, Inc.)

The airline-industry downturn claimed its first U.S. casualty in more than a year on Tuesday as Mesa Air Group Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection.

The regional carrier plans to continue flying for three major U.S. carriers—UAL Corp.'s United Airlines, Delta Air Lines Inc. and US Airways Group Inc.—but will reduce the size of its aircraft fleet in a bid to exit bankruptcy court this year.

In an interview Tuesday, Jonathan Ornstein, Mesa's chairman and chief executive, said he expects Mesa will need only "a matter of months" to emerge from bankruptcy. For the past two years, the airline has been working to pare debt, cutting about $160 million in obligations.

"We just ran out of time," Mr. Ornstein said.

The bankruptcy filing comes after the Phoenix-based carrier failed to reach an out-of-court deal with aircraft makers and other parties.

"There were simply too many of them and too many debts coming due," said Richard Pachulski, a bankruptcy attorney for Mesa, at a court hearing Tuesday. Mr. Pachulski said the airline isn't planning to sell its assets as part of the case, and has enough cash to operate without having to borrow.

At the hearing, Judge Martin Glenn of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan signed off on a number of routine requests that will allow Mesa to continue operating, including paying its 3,400 workers and key suppliers.

Mesa was once one of the most innovative regional carriers, but its fortunes have been marred by legal disputes and an abortive joint venture in China.

U.S. regional carriers operate mainly by collecting fees to fly to small cities on behalf of bigger network carriers. With fewer passengers flying, the regionals have been squeezed by more onerous contract terms and a shift away from regional jets that has left hundreds of the planes parked in the desert.

For the nine months ended June 30, Mesa reported a net loss of $24.2 million after making a full-year profit in 2008.

In its filing, Mesa listed assets of $975 million and liabilities of $869 million as of the end of September. Its largest unsecured creditors include Bombardier Inc. and Embraer, with the regional-jet makers owed $133 million and $42 million, respectively. It also has about $26 million in outstanding bonds.

Arrow Cargo grounded for good
Miami Herald 07/01/2010

Arrow Cargo, one of South Florida's oldest and largest air freight companies, announced Wednesday it had ceased operations effective immediately.

The closure marks the end of months of financial trouble for the company, which announced plans to lay off 473 workers in April in an effort to avoid going out of business.

At the time, Arrow was working to secure investors, but indicated via a statement that they were unsuccessful.

"The Company exhaustively searched for other options including financing or a sale of the business,'' the statement said.

Founded in 1950, Arrow employed nearly 450 workers in Miami and operated more than 60 flights weekly to and from South America, Central America and the Caribbean. It was the largest air freight line based at Miami International Airport.

Despite its size, the company posted operating losses of $26 million in 2009, and $28 million in 2008.

In a statement, the company cited "significant operating losses as a result of increasing operating costs and declining revenues'' as the reason for its failure.

According to the company's website, it employs 250 workers in addition to its Miami workforce. The statement said Arrow is focused on smoothing their transition, but offered no details on what will happen to those who lost their jobs.

Andi Salas, a spokeswoman for Arrow, declined to comment.

American Airlines has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and announced that its president, Thomas Horton, has succeeded Gerard Arpey as chief executive.

The carrier today filed voluntary petitions for reorganisation with the Southern District of New York bankruptcy court, citing the move as being "in the best interest of the company and its stakeholders".

Horton said: "We have met our challenges head on, taking all possible action to secure our long-term position. In recent years, even as the airline industry faced unprecedented challenges, American strengthened our domestic and global network; fortified our alliances with the best partners around the world; launched a transformational fleet deal that will give American the youngest and most efficient fleet in the industry; and invested in our product, service and technology to build a world class customer experience.

"But as we have made clear with increasing urgency in recent weeks, we must address our cost structure, including labour costs, to enable us to capitalise on these foundational strengths and secure our future. Our very substantial cost disadvantage compared to our larger competitors, all of which restructured their costs and debt through Chapter 11, has become increasingly untenable given the accelerating impact of global economic uncertainty and resulting revenue instability, volatile and rising fuel prices, and intensifying competitive challenges."

I have a feeling that airlines in the US do this from time to time to keep their employees humble and their demands for better wages low.

Spanair gone bust

PASSENGERS were stranded at Spanish airports today after airline Spanair abruptly went bust, cancelling all its flights at short notice.
"Faced with the lack of financial visibility for the coming months, the company has decided to cease its operations as a measure of caution and safety," Spanair said in a statement overnight.
Its last scheduled flight landed on Friday night, leaving rivals such as Iberia, Vueling and Easyjet to share out the passengers left stranded.
Spanish media said at least 22,000 passengers were affected over the weekend but Spanair spokespeople were not immediately available to confirm this.
A queue of 200 surprised passengers formed at Spanair counters at Barcelona airport last night shortly after the anouncement.
Airports authority AENA said this morning everything was normal at Madrid's Barajas airport and Barcelona's El Prat, where special lounges had been allocated for Spanair customers.

"Passengers are turning up at these zones and the other companies are putting them on flights," an AENA spokeswoman said.

She said 55 Spanair flights were scrapped at Madrid and 54 at Barcelona today alone, with a handful of flights cancelled at Palma de Mallorca and Gran Canaria.
The company said in its statement: "The Spanair management regrets this and apologises to all those people who are affected by this situation."
Spanair, founded in 1986, had tried to survive by a tie-up with Qatar Airways which fell through.
The Catalania regional authorities, which owns part of the company, said it was unable to increase its stake due to crisis budget cuts and EU limits.
In 2008 one of Spanair's jets crashed on take-off at Madrid airport with the deaths of 154 people.

That apparently has only been a cost-cutting exercise.

More like a back scratching exercise. A few months ago Air Asia and MAS undertook some form of share swap. Expect Air Asia to leave some markets to MAS, and vice versa.

Next prominent airline....
Hungary’s state-owned airline Malév has announced on Friday that as of 6.A.M. today its fights will not take off after 66 years of almost uninterrupted operation. A passenger told state-run newswire MTI that until 7 A.M. they were informed that Malév’s flights are delayed and were informed only than that all flights have been cancelled.

According to a statement released by the carrier, the passengers stuck in Budapest will be informed by airport staff how they could reach their destination and what indemnification they could claim.

A government decree issued on 31 January stipulates that all passengers are entitled for assistance who had purchased their ticket before the day Malév cancelled its flights and whose flight was scheduled for the day of stoppage or within three days after that. Those who had already reached their destination and their return flight (with Malév) is scheduled for a date no later than 29 February can also expect state assistance.

The carrier will help the passengers in need by rebooking their tickets or ensuring other means of transport to reach their destination.

Malév will hold a press conference at 8 A.M..
