Boeing 747: It just keeps going and going...

Postby IntheShade » Tue Sep 02, 2008 3:00 pm

The Boeing 747-200 that has been reappropriated as the Jumbo Hostel has a rich history. Under Transjet Airways, it ferried Muslim pilgrims to Mecca on top of global charter flights. It was grounded in 2002, and seemed destined to sit on a runway at Sweden's Arlanda Airport until entrepreneur Oscar Diös acquired it in '06.
Now, the stripped, insulated and sanitized interior of the 747 has gone from 450 seats to 25 compartmentalized rooms, and features a cafeteria on its second floor. Your wallet won't be light enough to fly after a night in the jet, either — true to its hostel name, Diös promises cheap rates when the plane opens up for its first bookings ever this December.

Here is something about "The world's No. 1 jumbo jet languishes, looking for a savior"
Excerpt:
THE FAINT LIGHT filtering through the long rows of little windows does not reveal a glorious picture. Plane double-ought-one was built as a test machine — a sacrificial lamb, if you will, for a coming fleet of birds now numbering more than 1,400. This plane made 12,000 test-flight cycles, and it shows.

Save for a klatch of ballast barrels in the aft section, No. 1 is an empty shell. The industrial look is accentuated by the lack of a plane's normal false ceiling or side panels. Walking its full, 231 feet gives you an X-ray view into the immensity of its structure — and engineering history.

"It's mostly intact," says tour guide Dan Hagedorn, the Museum of Flight's senior curator, over the hum of a large dehumidifier.

The floor, simple plywood in sections, is worn and creaky. An aluminum air duct runs along the plane's spine. Seemingly everywhere overhead, an array of steel flight-control cables winds through mazes of pulleys. Some parts bear numbers on old-fashioned black-and-white label-maker tape.

We climb the narrow, trademark spiral staircase and in "the hump" find the plane's lone creature-comfort space — a workers lounge resplendent with ashtray-equipped sofas upholstered in faded burnt-orange fabric that could be straight off the set of "Mad Men." Steps away is the surprisingly cramped cockpit, with its bewildering banks of analog gauges and dials, manual flight controls, heavy-duty metal switches and full-on engineering station — all now aeronautical relics.

The instruments bear the same settings as the last time the plane landed at Boeing Field in 1993, when No. 1 finished serving as a test bed for a new 777 engine. With pilot headsets slung casually aside next to tattered sheepskin-covered seats, it looks like the original flight crew might have just walked off the bridge for a smoke.

Funny, I was just down there yesterday. You can see RA001 peeking over the VC-137. Too bad it and the Connie never seem to be open for walking through. The VC-137 and the Concorde are always open.

Find out when the VC-137 and Concorde are open but when few people are about, take some gasoline and matches and set fire to both these aircraft.Because of the damage or hopefully loss of these craft your actions will cause the powers that be will be more minded to open the other two aircraft for walk-throughs.
Problem solved!

We are incredibly lucky to have one in flying condition down under - sounds awesome too.

I think it's amazing it only takes a little over 1 psi differential average over the wing surface to lift a 747-400 at MTOW.
you still have to find a crew willing to fly this "barely airworthy" heap
no such thing as "barely airworthy" it's either Airworthy or Not
100% incorrect Ever hear of Ferry Permit? issued for Non airworthy aircraft

Saw the LOT 787 sitting at ORD last night. It was parked at a remote spot off of taxiway D by runway 28, looking kinda abandoned. As we taxied by it, I was thinking "Polish aviation's flagship sitting dead in the water in the largest Polish city outside of Poland". There's gotta be something there, but I couldn't come up with anything. Any suggestions?

I bet NotKarl will come up with something that has to do with Poles, and size.

Did you like the livery?

BTW, in our ongoing support of Boeing Corporation we had exorcism performed on the other 787 sitting in Warsaw to rid the type of the evil spirits.

Although it was hardly noticed against the background of the usual landslide of orders, new product launches and first flight news at Paris, Boeing’s 747-8 program gained five more valuable orders for the passenger model from Korean Airlines. The order, when confirmed, raises the overall backlog to 60 which, for the first time in the program’s eight year history, is balanced evenly between the passenger and freight models.
* * *
The Korean win is a boost for the program which has been focused on continuous improvements since 2011 when the -8F entered service and “was not quite the aircraft we’d promised originally,” says 747-8 Vice President and General Manager Eric Lindblad. Upgrades have included re-rigging of the ailerons and rudder for more efficient cruise, an increase in payload of 12,000 lb. following analysis of the flight loads survey, and improvements to the display system and flight management computer to boost precision navigation and efficient climb. The company is also in the midst of flight tests to re-activate the tail fuel tank which was closed out in the original aircraft following the discovery of potential situation for vibrations and flutter under particular conditions.
* * *
The additional tail fuel, plus a performance improvement package for the GEnx-2B engines worth around 1.8% in lower fuel burn, is expected to restore the aircraft’s range capability to the 8,000 naut miles originally specified by the program. Together with structural weight savings that have reduced operating empty weight by 7,200 lb, the anticipated cumulative benefit is a 3.5% efficiency improvement over the 2011-standard aircraft.

But there is more to come as Boeing knows it needs to bolster sales of the passenger model as part of efforts to sustain the line long enough for the freighter market to pick up again. “We have series of weight reductions to come, so we’re not done,” says Lindblad. “We have a few hundred pounds left and we believe there’s more. We have identified a series of additional weight reductions and, as we get to 2015 and 2016, we’d like to have in excess of 8,200 naut miles out of this aircraft from a passenger version perspective.”

The connie is an incredibly aesthetically pleasing aircraft. Up there with concorde. It just looks "right".
Equally pleasing is that aircraft that looks preposterously phallic. You don't see them much any more...
Bulbous at one end....

Passenger plane (I suppose, because of the other planes you've mentioned)? FIghter? Bomber?

Jet? Turboprop?

The Carvair had rather more than two engines. The Bristol 170 didn't.
