Boeing Adjusts 747-8 Program Production and Delivery Schedule

* Deliveries of 747-8 Freighter to begin third quarter of 2010; deliveries of 747-8 Intercontinental passenger model to begin second quarter of 2011.
* Company working with customers to minimize disruption.

EVERETT, Wash., Nov. 14, 2008 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] today announced an adjusted schedule for production and delivery of the 747-8 Freighter and Intercontinental airplanes.

The revised schedule is based on a production and flight-test plan developed in conjunction with the company's suppliers that provides additional time for addressing issues that have slowed the program's progress. Those issues include supply chain delays driven by design changes to the airplane, limited availability of engineering resources inside Boeing, and the recent Machinists' strike that halted production in the company's factories.

Delivery of the first 747-8 Freighter will move from late 2009 to the third quarter of 2010. The first 747-8 Intercontinental passenger jet delivery moves from late 2010 to the second quarter of 2011.

"Our entire team has worked hard to mitigate growing schedule risk on this program but have been unable to overcome the collective impact of work statement increases to the original design, a tight supply of engineering resources, and the recent Machinists' strike," said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Scott Carson. "We are clearly disappointed in what this schedule change means for our customers, employees, suppliers and other stakeholders. However, it is the appropriate and prudent decision to ensure a successful program, and we are committed to working with our customers to mitigate any disruption it causes them."

The revised schedule is the result of a comprehensive assessment of the production system and flight-test plan that began in late August and concluded with the incorporation of the impact of the recent strike.

"The remaining work on the 747-8 program is well defined," said Ross R. Bogue, vice president and general manager -- 747 Program and Everett site. "This schedule adjustment provides the time we need to finish that work and bring both airplanes to market successfully for our customers."

The risk of a schedule adjustment on the program was previously identified and was provisioned for in Boeing's third quarter financial results. The company will provide updated financial guidance and a post-strike assessment of the schedule for all its commercial airplane programs at a later date.

747-8 Intercontinental completes 90-percent design milestone

- Engineering on 747-8 Intercontinental ahead of plan
- Program uses lessons learned from 747-8 Freighter development

The 747 program completed this week 90 percent of the design work for the 747-8 Intercontinental. The program has released the detailed designs in order to begin building parts, assemblies and tools for the new passenger airplane.

"I am proud of our team's performance on the 747-8 Intercontinental design work," said Mo Yahyavi, vice president and general manger of the 747 program. "Because of their focus and dedication, we achieved this milestone ahead of schedule."

The program set the drawing release plan for the 747-8 Intercontinental in December 2008. The team beat the plan by a week and a half.

"This performance improvement is a result of lessons learned on the 747-8 Freighter," said Todd Zarfos, vice president of Engineering for the 747 program. "We changed the way we approached the design of the 747-8 Intercontinental."

Following the 747-8 Freighter design effort, the program held several workshops to identify process improvements for the passenger version. Those improvements provided the program greater visibility on all steps in the engineering development, which served as leading indicators of performance in later steps. This enabled the program to quickly identify areas of need and provide help.

"Thanks to the process improvements the design releases were completed on time or ahead of schedule," said Tony Slama with Program Planning and Control for the 747 program. "The fuselage team is a perfect example of the improvement. They posted 49 consecutive weeks of 100-percent on-time release performance and counting."

The first-pass quality of the design releases also has improved by approximately 350 percent.

"We are in a better place on the 747-8 Intercontinental," said Yahyavi. "It is up to us to maintain this focus and carry it over to the production phase."

The program will begin production on the first 747-8 Intercontinental around mid 2010. The first delivery will occur in the fourth quarter of 2011.

Korea orders five 747-8 Intercontinentals

South Korea's top carrier becomes only the second airline after Germany's Lufthansa to order the plane, which has waited almost three years for a second passsenger-carrying customer as it was outsold by a sister freight version.

Industry executives say airlines are often reluctant to be the only customer for a new plane, due to the possible costs of dealing with any teething problems, and Boeing had been under pressure to find a second buyer to avoid losing Lufthansa.

Korean Air, the world's biggest air cargo carrier, already has arrangements to operate seven 747-8 freighters.

The latest purchase comes after Korean Air said in October it had been selected to produce wing structure components for the 747-8 through its "Tech Centre" aerospace division.

Boeing Completes 747-8 Freighter Engine Runs Successfully

Excerpt:
December 10, 2009 - Boeing successfully completed the first engine runs for the 747-8 Freighter. The milestone marks another step in the 747 program's steady progress in preparing for flight test. "We are very pleased with the engines' performance during this test," said Mo Yahyavi, vice president and general manager of the 747 program. "The engines and all the systems performed as expected."

Engine runs began slightly before 10 a.m. on Tuesday. During initial engine runs, the engines are started and operated at various power settings to ensure all systems perform as expected. The test began with the auxiliary power system providing power to start the first of four General Electric GEnx-2B engines. The remaining three engines were started using the cross-bleed function. Basic systems checks continued throughout the test. The engines were powered down and inspected.

The team completed a vibration check and monitored the shutdown logic to ensure it functioned as expected.

Vortices uh? Not enough wing flex and raked wing tip to minimize those?

Here is an interesting blog including phots of the interior of the test plane (water ballast tanks, monitoring stations) and discusison about the excellent performance on the first flight.
Excerpts:

Feuerstein made some quick calculations and realized they would have much more fuel remaining than expected when they landed after an inaugural flight slated to last four hours.

“We looked at the fuel flows at one point and the telemetry room at Boeing Field wanted to know what time we would land,” he said after Monday’s flight. “I asked them if 10 o’clock tonight would be okay.”

They said no.

The flight touched down at 4:18 p.m. local time after 219 minutes in the air. Feuerstein’s comments about the fuel burn were a great thing to say for a company marketing its new plane as an efficient alternative to the competition. The experienced pilots were quick to note it will require a closer look at the data before anyone can confirm an actual fuel burn number. But at a glance, the efficient wing design and engines appear to be holding up their end of the deal.

At take off, the 747-8 weighed about 630,000 pounds, relatively light for a 747 flight. Feuerstein said they used 20 degrees of flaps and rotated at 152 knots. The plane lifted off the ground at around the 4,000 foot marker. The landing was made with 25 degrees of flaps and at 151 knots. Feuerstein says these speeds were six to seven knots faster that what the airplane will do once in service.

“That’s just obviously to cover the uncertainties that might be out there,” Feuerstein said.

Feuerstein said they touched all the systems during the flight, including shutting down the engines. When asked which engine was shut down, he replied, “All of them.” Laughing, he quickly clarified, “But we did it one at a time!”

Boeing stays optimistic over 747-8I prospects
Flight International 09/14/2010
Author: Will Horton

Boeing is pitching its 747-8 Intercontinental passenger aircraft in a number of sale campaigns it could sign this year, according to vice-president of marketing Randy Tinseth.

Speaking in Sydney as the airframer detailed its outlook for the Oceania region, he said: "We're starting to gain traction again in the big airplane segment. We have a couple of opportunities in the market today that look pretty good."

Tinseth declined to disclose potential sale units or customer regions, but said: "They're continuing opportunities that we've had."

The 747-8's only passenger airline customers are Lufthansa with 20 on order and Korean Air, with five.

Boeing sees the large-capacity aircraft market as primarily a replacement market, and is aiming its campaign at 747-400 customers.

"You have to focus on airlines that fly -400s today and when they're going to start retire them. That's going to happen over the next few years and I think that's why we're seeing more interest," Tinseth said.
I would be very surprised if Boeing sells any more Intercontinentals before the end of the year, as Tinseth asserts. Potential customers are sitting back and waiting for the airplane to get certified and show some real world performance figures before committing. Which is what a little bird told me.

Any news about a big delay do to redesign / relocation of the inboard engine pylons to deal with some flutter problem?

(the news is 1 month old but I haven't seen it adressed here and now has resurfaced in another forum)
