Short Field Takeoff.

Postby 3WE » Tue Feb 12, 2008 10:29 pm

I saw this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SI4Jnyph ... re=related

I thought it was kind of cool.

Then I saw this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNDoo7wf42o&NR=1

Same stuff, but an order of magnitude bigger.

I worried a bit about the 150 guy not levling just a bit to build a little speed, but perhaps it's got a STOL kit and he had a healthy margin above stall? Am I counting paint blobs right, the 757 got off in 1,500 ft?

The idea of a high speed pass in a 150 is mind numbing.
You're not a Freight Dawg unless you've shot the ILS to 23L at KYIP in a transport category aircraft no longer used in passenger service. You're OG if it had a tailwheel or BMEP gauges.

I think the 150 guy displays very good "stick & rudder" skills but poor judgement.
He is playing too close to the limits and leaving all margin out.
The short T/O, keeping a high AOA after lift-off, followed by a very low altitude /very low speed / high AOA climbing turn!!!
He lands SHORT of the pavement twice!!!
He puts a camera close to the T/O landing path!!! (I wonder if there was a person behind that camera).

If he keeps flying like that he will once make a minor mistake or suffer another problem (an engine cough, an unexpected gust, etc...) that will put him outside the envelope and without margin to recover. The end.

Now about the 757...

It was a performance display. Probably the airplane was as light as it gets, say 50% of MTOW. Compared to a MTOW take-off:

At 50% MTOW the acceleration is doubled.
Not only that, but at 50% MTOW Vs, and hence Vr and Vlo, is 70% (maybe the pilots even over-rotated a bit and a bit below Vr, but let's not consider that)

So we have
a=2aMTOW
Vlo=0.7VloMTOW

Vlo=a*t ==> t=Vlo/a=0.7VloMTOW/2aMTOW=0.35tMTOW (the light 757 would lift-off in 35% of the time of the heavy one)
d=1/2*a*t^2=1/2*2aMTOW*(0.35tMTOW)^2=0.1225*aMTOW*tMTOW^2=0.245dMTOW

So for a very very light 757 it would take roughly 1/4 of the runway to lift off compared to one at MTOW.

X = paint blobs every 500 ft.
Y = 6000 ft takeoff distance for a 757
3X = observed takeoff distance at airshow.
0.25 = Gabes light weight takeoff correction factor.
Y * 0.25 = 3X

All is well.
