B727-200 VH-TXH Scrapping

Postby B77W-QOTS » Mon Feb 18, 2008 11:09 pm

On the 02/08/2008 VH-TXH was cut up for scrap it began at 07:28 and was all over by 11:30. There are alot of photos of the process so Im not going to subtitle each one but just give a breif run down of how it went and you should see what I mean by the sequence of pictures.

They made the first cut through the fueslage just forward of the R2 door so that the whole tail section broke away, they then cut through the tail above where engine 3 was to seperate it into two sections and then seperately crushed each section up. They then cut up the right wing followed by the left wing, they cut the wing up in half, they had to stop after they started cutting through the left wing as when they went through the fuel tank it was discovered there was still fuel in the tank (even though they had been drained and vented for some weeks) they used 'kitty litter' to absorb the fuel before continuing to remove the left wing, once the wings were removed it was a matter of just cutting through the forward fueslage they started above the floor and worked through the upper section first before crushing through the lower section of the fueslage.

There is more bad news on the B727 front with VH-VLH to finish flying at the end of this month, she is due for a C check and whist it is decided weather it is worth the cost to proceed with the C check or not she will be parked up against the fence at JH, VH-VLI will continue to fly.

Enjoy the pictures it was very overcast in MEL today so sorry they are dark.

Spoke to the recyclers and said that the scrap is taken to shredding plant in Laverton it is all shreaded and sorted into metal types and will more than likely be sold to China where it will be smelted and made into new products.

A once beautiful product of engineering, a flying machine.

It carried people? things, It soared through the sky- maybe the climb was anemic, maybe it had the new engines and did not. Still FL3someting and 500 mph is nothing to scoff about.

Now it's gone.

Are you sure it is a complete write-off?? I see nothing a bit of duct tape and maybe a bottle of super-glue cannot fix....
Could be interesting to see the process as a time-lapse sequence. At least you could then reverse the order and see an alternative method of building aircraft.

I am thinking that what you describe is the process to produce cheap composites?

That yellow and black "culprit" is bad-a.........
you still have to find a crew willing to fly this "barely airworthy" heap
no such thing as "barely airworthy" it's either Airworthy or Not
100% incorrect Ever hear of Ferry Permit? issued for Non airworthy aircraft
LOL

They probably could have raised a lot of money for charity if they had auctioned off a chance to ride along in the culprit.

I'm surprized the flaps and LEDs were still on, figured they'd have some core value. Maybe shipping them out from Oz wasn't worth it. Somewhere there's video of one of our's being cut up, it really does go fast.
You're not a Freight Dawg unless you've shot the ILS to 23L at KYIP in a transport category aircraft no longer used in passenger service. You're OG if it had a tailwheel or BMEP gauges.
