Boeing sets 31 March for 787-10 first flight

Boeing will conduct first flight of the 787-10 on 31 March, subject to weather and other factors.

The maiden flight will be operated by a 787-10 equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines. The aircraft is also offered with General Electric GEnx powerplants.

Boeing is exclusively assembling the 787-10 in North Charleston, South Carolina - where the jet rolled out in a February ceremony headlined by US President Donald Trump.

The largest variant of the 787 family is scheduled for first delivery in the first half of 2018. Boeing has secured 149 orders for the 787-10.

Boeing's newest, largest Dreamliner jet makes first test flight

Boeing Co's (BA.N) newest and largest Dreamliner model, the 787-10, took off successfully on its first flight on Friday, kicking off a flight test program for the high-tech jet.

The plane, which sells for $312.8 million at list price and rounds out a family of three carbon-fiber composite Dreamliners, is being built exclusively at Boeing's factory in North Charleston, South Carolina. The facility is Boeing's only jetliner assembly factory outside of Washington state and, in contrast to the others, is not unionized.

Last month, the same plane provided a dramatic backdrop for President Donald Trump's visit to the Boeing factory on Feb 17, where he promised to boost U.S. manufacturing and punish companies for moving jobs overseas.

Companies in Japan, China, Italy, Sweden, France and Britain produce many of the 787's major components, such as wings, fuselage sections and the rudder. Airlines can choose engines from General Electric Co (GE.N) of the U.S., or Britain's Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC (RR.L).

The first 787-10 took off from the runway around 9:38 a.m. ET on an initial flight expected to last four hours.

The 787-10 is the second and final "stretch," or elongation, of the original 787-8, which debuted in 2011.

The 787-10 seats 330 passengers in a typical cabin configuration, 40 more than the 787-9 and 88 more than the 787-8.

The 787 family has been a top seller, logging about 1,200 firm orders. So far, the 787-10 has booked 149 orders from nine customers, about 12 percent of the total of firm orders. The mid-sized 787-9 has captured just over half the total.

After spending 2017 in testing, the 787-10 is expected to enter service with airlines in 2018.

Here is another weenie news article that doesn't seem to understand the need for test flights.

Excerpt:
TEST FLIGHT?

Boeing’s plan to draw an airplane in the sky dumped at least 300,000 kg of carbon dioxide
* * * *

Such an endeavor may not be a complete waste. Boeing has traced such unusual flight paths before, while testing a plane’s capability to accomplish maximum duration flight. (We’ve reached out to Boeing for comment and will update the story when we hear back.)

In 2012, another 787 traced the Boeing logo. “This wasn’t a joy ride,” Boeing’s vice president of marketing Randy Tinsmith wrote on the company blog. “It was an 18 hour… flight test for a 787-8 with GE engines. Our team coordinated with the many air traffic control centers, choosing the routing to avoid restricted airspace.”

Earlier this year, Boeing 737 MAX traced “MAX” across the sky to test that it could fly for nine hours straight. “The flight was to be further bounded by a working range within the Seattle and Salt Lake Air Route Traffic Control Centers’ airspaces to minimize administrative workload,” said Boeing’s flight test engineer Andreas Weisweave on the company blog.

The video is almost boring... 60 MPH winds but it looks more like 20. I was hoping more for some YouTube quality crosswind stuff. :-)

Evan had to call it a 1960s airplane...I guess because it has a wheel, rudder pedals and throttle levers...I guess his stick equipped airbus is more modern, even though sticks are a 1920's era thing...

Are you Evan?

Yeah, I like rudder reversals.

But it's not that simple black and white as you try to make it.

I also like wing waggles and dips and crabs and single-wheel touchdowns and sideways lurches and aileron and elevator reversals. (and associated steering spoiler activations)

Then there is the cowboy genius airmanship of the human being interpreting the view out the window and making appropriate inputs (sometimes including rudder reversals).

It is all a thing of beauty.

787-10 Receives FAA Approval. (First delivery - to SQ - expected in late March)

The Federal Aviation Administration has issued the Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner an amended type certificate (ATC), clearing the airplane for commercial service in the U.S., the manufacturer announced Monday. The award caps a flight-test program involving three flight-test airplanes that clocked some 900 hours in the air. The amended certification lays the basis for approval by other regulatory agencies around the world, including the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), whose final endorsement will allow launch Singapore Airlines to launch service during the second quarter.

Speaking with AIN early this month, Boeing 787 chief project engineer Bob Whittington explained that the company had originally planned to use four test airplanes in the program, but as the 787-10’s commonality with its smaller sibling, the 787-9, became more and more apparent during the early stages of design, so did the lack of a need for much of the testing to demonstrate the differences between the two models.

The 787-10 and -9 use 95 percent common part numbers, not only reducing the number of test hours needed for the -10 but undoubtedly aiding work flow once full-scale production of the latest Dreamliner begins in North Charleston, South Carolina. Apart from its 18-foot stretch, the only visually obvious difference between the -9 and -10 lies in the -10's semi-levered main landing gear, leaving only some minor structural reinforcements in the fuselage and some systems modifications to account for the bigger cabin. Boeing arrived at the 18-foot stretch by inserting five frames in front of the wing and four frames aft of the wing, allowing for the addition of 40 passengers seats and total capacity of 330 in a two-class layout. Using exactly the same wing found in the -9, the -10's only other significant differences involve localized strengthening of the fuselage, an increase in the capability of the environmental control system and enough extra cargo space for one more pallet or two extra LD-3 containers in both the forward and aft holds.

While maximum landing weight increases by 20,000 pounds to 445,000 pounds and maximum zero fuel weight jumps 25,000 pounds to 425,000 pounds, maximum takeoff weight remains unchanged at 560,000 pounds. Powered by either the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000-TEN or GEnx-1B, the 787-10’s range decreases to 6,430 nautical miles from 7,635 nautical miles.

Completing function and reliability trials and ECS testing ahead of schedule, the third airplane, designated ZC002, revealed no surprises since its first flight during the summer. “It actually performed better than expected,” said Whittington.

By the time Whittington spoke with AIN on January 5, the first airplane—Trent 1000-TEN-powered ZC001—had completed all but a final stage of stability and control software validation, performing crosswind landings and tailwind takeoffs in Newfoundland. Incorporating technologies from the Trent XWB and Advance engine including a “rising-line” compressor and three-stage bladed disc (blisk) at the front of the high-pressure compressor, the Trent 1000-TEN promised a 3-percent fuel burn advantage over the Trent 1000, the original Rolls option for the 787-8 and 787-9. Entering service with an Air New Zealand 787-9 and a Scoot 787-8 last November, the Trent 1000-TEN has not delivered quite the fuel burn performance Rolls promised, however, and Whittington awaited a new software package to recoup the less than 1-percent deficiency by mid-year.

However, in the 787-10, Boeing’s aerodynamic measurements showed a roughly 1 percent better-than-expected drag coefficient, thereby countering the slight deficiency experienced in the Trent 1000-TEN-powered -8 and -9.

Overall, Whittington expressed complete satisfaction with the pace and performance of the aircraft program. As much as the smooth introduction of the 787-9 contrasted with the tortured path of the 787-8’s launch to its entry into service, the 787-10 has done as well as if not better than the -9. “It’s a tough comparison to make because of that commonality difference,” explained Whittington. “The -8, of course, was so unique and so new and so innovative, that flight test program was very long and very complicated...The big difference for us is the customers told us they really wanted the -10 to be as common as we could with the -9, and that really did structure out test program...It’s more common than any airplane that I know of and I’ve been here 32 years, and this has been the most straightforward test program that I’ve ever seen.”

Built exclusively in Charleston largely because the mid-body fuselage section cannot fit in a Dreamlifter for transport to Boeing’s plant in Everett, Washington, the first -10 moved through the South Carolina factory “significantly" more easily than the first -9 moved thorough Everett, added Whittington. “The 787-10 flowed seamlessly through the production system,” he said. “We had half the number of manufacturing problems on the -10 than we did on the -9 in terms of non-conformances written, and the total flow through the factory is almost identical...The manufacturing system doesn’t really know the difference between a -9 and a -10.”

In an effort to ensure that its customers, too, will see little difference between the two models while flying them in revenue service, Boeing spent a lot of time and energy validating maintenance manuals and preparing to operate the airplanes in flight test much like an airline would. Meanwhile, the group of airlines that comprised the program’s advisory panel—including Singapore—emphasized their strong desire for commonality over range. “The group of customers that we worked with were key in telling us not to stretch the range on the -10, that building in weight or capability in the airplane that they didn’t necessarily need for range was not as valuable to them as it being common to the -9,” said Whittington.

As of mid-January holding orders for 171 of the 787-10, Boeing most recently inked a letter of intent with Emirates Airline during November’s Dubai Airshow calling for an eventual firm order for 40. On the decision to choose the Dreamliner over the Airbus A350, an order for 70 of which Emirates canceled some three years ago, Emirates Emirates chairman and CEO Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum explained that fleet planners looked closely at both options and reached the conclusion that the Boeing product made the most sense for several reasons, including maintenance cost considerations

And in a few years they will launch the 787-10LR, with the weight and range increases that they are leaving at a side now.

Boeing 787 being converted to VIP jet has unusual accident at Moses Lake airfield

Image

Some of Boeing’s early 787 Dreamliners were so messed up during assembly that they were unsuitable for sale to an airline and sat in storage for years with no takers. A few were eventually sold off to be expensively re-worked as private VIP jets.

Adding a sad coda to that woeful history, last Thursday in Moses Lake, one of those VIP airplanes fell on its face.

As the jet sat on the ramp at Grant County International Airport, where a custom interior was being installed, the nose landing gear collapsed. The carbon-fiber forward fuselage hit the ground, as did the engine pods.

No one was hurt, but the plane sustained damage that according to one expert “looks like it could be quite expensive.”

The airplane, Dreamliner No. 11, was bought by Korean Air — but not for use as a regular commercial airliner. Airline spokesman Nathan Cho said Korean will operate the aircraft for an anonymous VIP client

Greenpoint Technologies of Kirkland, which designs and builds custom luxury aircraft interiors “for private clients and Heads-of-State,” won the contract to complete the aircraft conversion.

Boeing first assembled the plane in 2009 but, because of repeated re-work, it didn’t roll out until six years later. In 2015, Boeing finally delivered the jet to Korean Air.

The jet flew to Moses Lake where Greenpoint was to do the interior modifications, which are typically very expensive and take years to complete.

Now, in addition to that ongoing work, the damage sustained with the face plant will have to be repaired.

Greenpoint marketing director Christine Hadley refused to answer questions about what happened or about the likely repair.

“A private VIP 787 at Greenpoint Technologies experienced an incident which is under investigation,” she said in a curt emailed statement.

And here's me thinking 7 hours in a Screamliner was hell in the air.
Seventeen hours?
I checked Seat Guru for that flight, and it looked like standard economy seating.
At least the Singapore A340-500 (?) had more room in monkey class.

4/15/2018: A number of headlines cite troubles with fan blades and a downgrading of the 787 ETOPS approvals.

All airplanes should have two different engines available from different manufacturers with minimal swap out effort required!

Could some spare 340 engines work? Oh wait, they have been known to do nasty things to composite wing struts...

Why not have two different engines from different manufacturers actually installed on all 787s?
That way you would be certain that one of your engines is the most reliable engine available.
