IIRC, Boeing reported that there was a shortcut due to a tool or a washer left on the panel by the supplier, and that the panel and insulation performed as expected as the fire self-extinguished.

Is there a difference?
Well, a shortcut is measured as distance or time saved.
A short circuit is measured in amperes.

A short circuit happens when electrical power finds a shorter path to ground than the intended route through the circuit. Shorter path sounds like a "shortcut" to me! 8-)

Uh, No!

A short circuit is a faulty or accidental connection between two points of different potential in an electric circuit, not necessarily a shorter path to ground. It could be a much longer path (just lower electrical resistance path) to ground.
However, "when electrical power finds a shorter path to ground than the intended route through the circuit", it is a short circuit.

you still have to find a crew willing to fly this "barely airworthy" heap
no such thing as "barely airworthy" it's either Airworthy or Not
100% incorrect Ever hear of Ferry Permit? issued for Non airworthy aircraft

NTSB: Fan shaft failed on 787 during taxi test

NTSB investigators last week went to a GE. plant in Cincinnati where the engine was built to examine it. They found that a mid-shaft fractured and the shaft is undergoing detailed study and metallurgical inspections to determine why.

Investigators are also looking at manufacturing and assembly records for the engine.

Yes, I know. Thank you for the rudimentary lesson. I-5 is the shortest distance from work to home but when I'm driving home from work and I-5 is backed up for 30 miles because Seattle drivers are staring at a couple of pigeons having sex on the guardrail, I find a path with less resistance. I call this my "shortcut" because it has lower resistance and makes it easier for me to get home, not because it's a shorter distance.

Shortcut
1. A more direct route than the customary one. 2. A means of saving time or effort.

You're welcome!

You are welcome! Your travel choice has no relevance. ;) Electricity has no choice, it follows the path of least resistance, no matter the distance.

Not really. It follow ALL paths, with more current on those paths of less resistance and less current on those of greater resistance.
Or try to put yourself in parallel with a light bulb and tell me.

If we're still talking about a short circuit, any other current paths are at minimum since voltage is now down to almost nothing.
Heat, light, smoke, and maybe a few exploding parts as collaterals are all in the "short circuit" path...

Two bulbs in parallel is ok.
Two bulbs + a short = no light + trouble.

I think the only way to know who's right is to take an actual forumite and put it in parallel wit a light bulb. I vote for blueblack.

Thank you. Usually with a short circuit, circuit protection kicks in and removes power from it. It's pretty instantaneous.
