Depends!
you still have to find a crew willing to fly this "barely airworthy" heap
no such thing as "barely airworthy" it's either Airworthy or Not
100% incorrect Ever hear of Ferry Permit? issued for Non airworthy aircraft

Hard-Hit Qantas Cancels Boeing Aircraft Worth $8.5 Billion
The Wall Street Journal 08/23/2012
Author: Ross Kelly
(Copyright (c) 2010, Dow Jones & Company, Inc.)

SYDNEY—Australia's flag carrier Qantas Airways Ltd. reported its first annual loss in almost two decades Thursday and canceled orders for 35 Boeing Co. fuel-efficient aircraft with a list price of US$8.5 billion in a bid to save money.

The biggest ever 787 order cancellation is a further blow to the U.S. aircraft manufacturer, following lengthy delays bringing the Dreamliner, a twin-engine super-light model, up to standard. Boeing last year delivered the first 787 to Japan's All Nippon Airways Co., more than three years behind the original delivery schedule.

Compensation payments to carriers for delays and cost overruns in developing the aircraft have already put the profitability of the 787 project under pressure. Qantas's cancellation comes after China Eastern Airlines Corp. in October killed an order for two dozen of the jets.

Global airlines like Qantas are struggling to stay in the black and reassessing spending plans as lingering global economy concerns curb spending on big-ticket items such as long-haul flights, and obstinately high oil prices keep fuel costs high.

Qantas's move brings the number of 787s currently on order down to 824 from 859, a U.S.-based Boeing spokesman said, adding that there was "still strong demand from customers around the world for the aircraft."

Qantas faces its own unique challenges. The airline is fighting to hold on to its coveted investment-grade credit rating as a robust performance from its domestic-flights operation is offset by heavy losses at the international division. Based deep in the southern hemisphere, Qantas is an end-of-line carrier that is more exposed to soaring jet-fuel costs, and the long-delayed arrival of the 787s has lumbered it with fuel-guzzling 747s longer than it expected.

"Qantas look like they have made the necessary steps to tidy up their balance sheet as well as keep future capex at manageable levels," said Nicholas Markiewicz, an analyst at Credit Suisse. "The question now remains how this impacts the medium-term growth in the business."

Qantas said it has retained options and purchase rights for 50 of the 787-9 aircraft, a large version of the 787 that can fly longer distances than the 787-8. There has been no change to the group's plans for the 787-8, 15 of which will be delivered from the second half of next year.

"Qantas continues to practice disciplined capital management and, in the context of returning Qantas International to profit, this is a prudent decision," Chief Executive Alan Joyce said.

The Sydney-based company booked a net loss for the year to June 30 of 245 million Australian dollars (US$257.4 million), compared with A$250 million profit a year earlier. It was the airline's first annual loss since it was privatized by the Australian government in 1995.

Underlying pretax profit of A$95 million was at the top end of company guidance of A$50 million-A$100 million.

The airline has already delayed the delivery of two A380 superjumbo jetliners, valued at US$390 million each at list prices, from the Airbus unit of European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co.

Qantas last year ordered as many as 110 single-aisle A320 Airbus jets, valued at US$9 billion at list prices, in the biggest single aircraft order in Australian history. The order included 78 A320neos, the manufacturer's more fuel-efficient version of the A320.

In an effort to return the ailing international-flights unit to break-even by 2014, the airline is terminating poorly performing routes, cutting almost 3,000 jobs, consolidating engineering and catering bases, and establishing joint ventures in Asia through low-cost offshoot Jetstar, such as Jetstar Japan and Jetstar Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Air Reviews A380s After Scrapping London Flights

Hong Kong Airlines, holder of the biggest backlog of Airbus SAS A380 orders in Asia, said it’s reviewing plans to add the superjumbos after scrapping its only intercontinental route. The fate of the 10-plane order will be decided “based on our future development and the market situation,” President Yang Jianhong told reporters in Hong Kong yesterday. He didn’t give a timeframe for the decision or say whether talks with Airbus were under way.

The carrier, whose fleet size has also been limited by Hong Kong’s regulator, has changed its strategy to focus on serving Asian routes with smaller A320s and A330s, Yang said. The airline is halting its all-business-class service to London’s Gatwick Airport after less than a year as it struggled to lure passengers from Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. (293) amid a slowing corporate-travel market.

Getting a Little Personal

Airbus Accused of Gutless Models Hits Back at Boeing 787 Parts
Airbus SAS, a week after being accused by Boeing Co. (BA) of lacking the guts to develop an all-new airplane, hit back by ridiculing as inferior its arch-rival’s choice of parts on the first 787 Dreamliner shown to the world.

“The aircraft we rolled out a couple of weeks ago didn’t have rivets from Wal-Mart, like the ones our competitors had at the time off their roll-out,” Tom Enders, the chief executive officer of Airbus parent European Aeronautic, Defence & Space Co., told investors at the annual shareholders meeting today. “It’s a real aircraft.”

* * * *
Airbus doesn’t “have an airframe that can compete” with the 777X, the upgraded version of Boeing’s biggest twin-engine plane, Boeing CEO Jim McNerney said at an investor conference on May 22. “They don’t have the appetite to do a ground-up airplane, and they’d have to do a ground-up airplane.’

The A350 is Airbus’s response to the 787 Dreamliner and the popular 777, and the first painted aircraft emerged from a hangar this month, indicating the maiden flight is nearing. Fabrice Bregier, the Airbus head who succeeded Enders, kept the roll-out to a low-key event reserved only for employees, with outside spectators catching only a remote glimpse from a fence.

Has anyone heard the term "end-of-line carrier" or is this the WSJ creating more bullshit jargon?

Yes.

Synonymous for losing market share to Emirates who are the opposite of an "end-of-line" carrier

Another cancelled flight for Norwegian's Screamliners, they've had three or four during the last two weeks for various technical reasons and they have how many of these birds. Two?
OK, so the flight from JFK was not actually cancelled, only delayed by 5 hours and 77 pax had to be left behind due to weight limitations. Something to do with dead hydraulics. For the 77 the flight was cancelled though.
I bet Mr. Kjos is looking forward to receive more of these masterpieces.

In which case they could have added another 77 pax. Happy ones.

Norwegian Air calls in Boeing to explain Dreamliner glitches

"We are going to tell them this situation is far from good enough," company spokeswoman Anne-Sissel Skaanvik told Reuters. "We have not had the reliability that we had expected from brand new planes, so something must happen, fast ... Clearly Boeing has not had good enough operative quality control."
Couple that with being offered rakfisk for lunch and those Boeing Executives are in for one hell of a bad day...

Boeing execs meet Norwegian Air after Dreamliner breakdowns
Reuters News 09/25/2013

OSLO, Sept 25 (Reuters) - Norwegian Air Shuttle will meet U.S. plane maker Boeing executives in Oslo on Wednesday to discuss the repeated technical problems with its two Dreamliners.

"We expect them to take criticism seriously, take their share of responsibility and come to the table with specific and constructive suggestions," Norwegian Air spokesman Lasse Sandaker-Nielsen said.

Norwegian, which operates two brand new Boeing 787 Dreamliners, suffered repeated malfunctions in recent weeks, ranging from electrical to hydraulic faults, which forced the budget carrier to ground the aircraft several times.

Norwegian declined to say who would take part in the talks but a source close to the firm said they expect Boeing Commercial Airplanes Chief Executive Ray Connor to meet Norwegian CEO Bjoern Kjos.

This is starting to remind me of the battle between the DC10 and the Tristar.

The DC10 got on the market first but there were so many design issues and it was rightly criticised as a rushed design.

I would be surprised if this could happen in this age of transparency, but many of the reported faults seem to the type which could have been exposed in the testing stage.

I hope this gets sorted out. With so many future orders, Boeing really doesn't want to spend its profits fixing them all or compensating operators for lost revenue.

Wouldn't it be nice to hear ITS's comments on this?

?? the A350... but don't run off making the analogy about that aircraft. It is simply starting to smell like the 787 was in need of more development before it pissed off the airlines.

After the 777 there were rightfully high expectations of exceptional dispatch rates and safety, and I still hope the 787 will achieve this.
